Land Rover conversions

Friday morning dreaming….

Just like to throw a thought out there for discussion. I dream of a LR based camper, something with a fibreglass back and fully equipped.. OK nothing unusual about that (specially here in HUBB) and I don’t have a 40.000 euro budget…

So to kick off am I right in saying a Discovery 200 or 300 tdi is the same as a Defender 200 or 300 mechanically ? the reason I ask, is here in Belgium a 110 defender 200 will cost you 10.000 euro the same year / and better condition discovery will cost 5.000 euro (I guess it’s the same almost every where) … Big difference…

So that has me thinking, buy a Disco cut off the back, graft on a fiber-glass back or a Defender pick-up back !!! and its at this point I’ll ask why haven’t I heard or seen anyone else doing this ? someone will tell me the Disco chassis isn’t level …too narrow … grafting fibreglass to the Disco front will be impossible to make water proof !!! then getting a SVA !! what am I missing…

Back to work I guess…

Salut Matt

Now that is something I have never thought of let alone seen. I have been trawling through many LR & off-road forums for a couple of years now and I have never seen something like that, sorry.

Try talking to people at places like Footloose or Foleys, they might be able to point you in the right direction but I have a feeling they will either tell you to buy a Defender or a Toyota.

Besides, by the time you've spent all that money coverting the Disco you could of probably bought the Defender, just my thoughts, good luck

It's quite a project you are dreaming about .
Why don't you look for an exmilitary ambulance built on a Disco/Range Rover chassis ?
There is a 130 inch wheelbase Defender [ Rapier ?? ] that would make a good conversion as well .
OR
Convert the Disco to a pick up ,which Landy enthusiasts have been doing for years ,then build a camper body on the back .It could be independant of the cab [no leaks] and the camper could be demounted and the vehicle used as a regular pick up .
The Disco will be much more comfortable to drive than the Defender as well .

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
