Jap diesel conversions

Hi, I seem to remember Brit 4x4 mags often have ads in the back proposing Jap TD motors at reasonable prices; I'm looking into replacing the 2.6 petrol in my ZA built 1992 Mazda pickup which hasn't survived EU petrol (it was a guzzly block anyway).
The rest of the vehicle is hard as nails which could make it worthwile (depending of course on the price).
Trouble is I'm not in the UK so I can't get the mags I'm talking about.

How complicated are the legalities of such a conversion in the UK? It's still ZA registered so I'll probably choose which country to 'import' it to as a function of the admin difficulty (Difficult to be worse than France).
Has anyone on the forum had any dealings with Jap TD converters?
Thanks
Luke

Luke,

I may be wrong but I think these engines are imported from Japan by container because after three years they don't meet local environmental requirements or something. They rip off engines for sale abroad and dump the rest of the car.

I don't know about the mag adverts but I've seen an advert zip tied to a lamp post in West London - "Engine problems? Don't repair - replace!" That must be one of those companies.
