IVECO 40.10 (35.10) Timing Chain help needed
 

Hi

100k miles so about 160k in kms completed.
Just had bit of a road trip around California and noticed a rattle at low (idle speed) revs.

It sounds like a loose timing chain.

If I rev up it stops and I know that adjustment is controlled by auto based on oil pressure.

Could my chain have stretched significantly to now perhaps require a link removed ?

am I thinking logically ?
anybody else had similar ?
any tips on fixing / checkin ?

if not timing chin then what else could it be ?

should I worry ? ! ! !

I had a rattle that I was told was the flywheel bearing, a very small bearing in the middle of the flywheel....anyway I replaced it and the clutch while I was there, and still had the rattle!...when someone else looked at it they said it was idling to low, they adjusted the fuel pump, two mins work and the noise disapeared.

Mine still rattles a bit at tick over

For a start drain and check your engine oil for foreign pollution.

i know this may sound stupid but is the engine oil to the max because sometimes this is enough to make the chain rattle at tick over?
If ok, it may be the chain,but normally the rattle sounds worst at about 2200 revs when driving-cruising in top.
To my knowledge you cant take a link out of the chain,but you normally can get away without replacing the gears and just replacing the chain and guides.
if you remove the top timing cover you will be able to see the chain and 2 of the guides for wear marks also whilst the cover is off you can run the engine to ensure the tensioner is working correctly and not returning to far.

As previously stated check oil or better replace oil & filter,then start from there because a complete kit chain,guides gears tensioner gaskets are about a grand.
