i know this may sound stupid but is the engine oil to the max because sometimes this is enough to make the chain rattle at tick over?
If ok, it may be the chain,but normally the rattle sounds worst at about 2200 revs when driving-cruising in top.
To my knowledge you cant take a link out of the chain,but you normally can get away without replacing the gears and just replacing the chain and guides.
if you remove the top timing cover you will be able to see the chain and 2 of the guides for wear marks also whilst the cover is off you can run the engine to ensure the tensioner is working correctly and not returning to far.
As previously stated check oil or better replace oil & filter,then start from there because a complete kit chain,guides gears tensioner gaskets are about a grand.
