is a petrol prado capable

I am thinking of taking a petrol 2700cc prado 90series on a round trip from nigeria-niger-algeria-libya-egypt-sudan-ethiopia. Anyone know if the vehicle is capable of taking 4 passengers and a desert payload? Is it underpowered? I dont plan on going off-piste or sand duning. Apart from being heavier on fuel, is the petrol engine significantly inferior to a diesel? Or should i stick to an old 80 series 4.2? I have a 80 series but it requires a lot of work (and moolah!) to get it roadworthy and i have an option to acquire a prado. Just not sure if it will cut it.

Prado

The vehicle is OK for what you want to do but you will find it very cramped with 4 people.I don't think you will be able to pack a full expedition type kit and 4 people.

They are a bit on the small side for overlanding so it will all depend what you want to take besides yourselves.

prado OK? oh yes

I agree with Tony they are a bit small for 4 people all your stuff, then all the stuff you will need for the trip.
They are more than capable thou. I live in Australia and people love them here, they do the hard stuff and the easy stuff. You often see them in the outback too.
Off course do the basics beforehand. Tyres, suspension.mechanicals, snorkel and lots of water !

Have a good trip

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
