Gunk
 

I'm sorting through my spares box and I have a range of 'gunk in tube' products that were randomly selected before previous trips.

There is a whole range of things 'Super Steel Epoxy-Weld', 'Alridite', silicone, radiator stop leak etc etc

So wondering if I'm missing anything. What do you guys and girls take when it comes to gunk in a tube or bottle

Important tidbit: this stuff EXPIRES!

On average, from what I can gather and personal experience, they're good for about a year.

I've had several long conversations with the techies at Loctite, manufacturer of all sorts of chemicals we like.

When pressed, they will tell you that a year is average. Expiry dates are not printed on the box for reasons they couldn't give me. :thumbdown: If you dig deep into the literature on the products you may - or may not - find expiry dates.

That holds for "Loctite" thread lockers too. Something I found out after buying a big bottle, used it on a couple of bolts, then put it aside... :oops2:

I had better start from scratch then as most of my existing tubes are 5 years old (nothing every goes wrong with a 20 year old Land Rover so I have never had to use any of it) and have spent most of their time in a baking hot metal vehicle which probably doesn't help with longevity....

So a good complete list from scratch would be......??:

loctite hydraulic thread sealer can't remember the number of the top of my head.

Wynns power steering leak stop

Normal loctite 243, 270 etc in the tiny sample bottles.

Which reminds me. If you have a chat with Loctite, they may oblige to some samples... Especially if you tell them that your trip is long etc, etc.. You may have to offer to provide a home to a bumper sticker! They are very helpful and have some interesting products available.

threadlock
burns cream
silicone grease

When I emailed Loctite and asked their advice they send me a huge pack of products in a sexy red case with a helpful booklet explaining when to use what product.

Keep loctite in the fridge and it will last a lot longer .

Thought they would. How much of it is useful to the trip?

Most of it I think - some nice stuff in there and a really handy book about all of the products, what they are designed for and surface preparation etc.
