Four wheels, not two

I'm sure we've all heard, read, or even said how much 'better' it is to overland on a motorcycle compared to a car, but having done both I'm not so sure.

People often say that on a bike you can see/hear/feel/taste/smell so much more, and while that's true for the most part it's not always the case.

Riding a bike is far more demanding than driving a car; you have to pay attention to the road and what's on it constantly, and tend to miss what's in the peripheral.

I've read that motorcyclists are better received in 3rd world countries compared to "rich" people driving in air conditioned 4WDs, but this isn't my experience. I've seen countless motorcyclists riding $30,000 bikes in 3rd world countries that are far more out of place than my $3000 4WD.

Plus, if you can sleep in your car comfortably, the need for hotels and tent setup is eliminated, leaving more time for sight seeing and exploration.

But I'd like to know what others think: are two wheels really 'better' than four, or is it image and hype that make more people think so?

I'll let you know in a month or so, I've just switched from a bike to a truck.

I don't think one is 'better' than the other. Just different. For me the advantages in 4 wheels are comfort, carrying capacity, security etc. whereas on 2 the advantages are more emotive than practical: freedom, adventure, that connection to the locals mentioned, the challenge.
Also, I can afford a real nice bike but only a shed of a car!
