Diagonal tires ?

Hi,

At the moment I have Mitas MPT-05 diagonal tires fitted at my Unimog 404.
Is it advisable to use these tires for a Africa overland or is it better to use radial tires like a Michelin XZL

Hi Benny,
The MPT 5 is a good tyre but the side lugs are quite aggresive for sand, the XZL will perform better on road and on sand, will give a longer footprint,(flexes better) will run cooler and last longer.
It and the XS are probably the best tyres, the XS is too sand biased and wears quickly, the XZL is diffucult to beat - thats why nearly everyone (with Trucks) uses it.
If you are heading to West Africa, try Michelin Dealers in Spain for a good price.

I use the MPT07 on my Landrover 101

Seems to work well in Sand (iceland - not tried sahara sand on these tyres yet). This tyre is a road pattern with lugs

The MPT05 looks to be based on the continental MPT81 which are said to be designed for sand
