defender 110 tyre size
 

I was planning to fit 235x85 R16's BFG AT's to my 110 for the trans africa trip. I have just seen another 110 that was shod with 265x75 R16's MT's.
I know the extra width wont be any help in the deserts but what about the rest of the trip, mud, rocks, gravel etc etc... will the wider tyre help, maybe stop sinkage 'cos of the extra area???

Also will the bigger tyres effect anything eg. turning circles, fuel consumption (only on tarmac i guess) or need any modifications to the suspension/steering

and one last thing, sorry going on a bit, what about steel wheels, does anyone have an opinion on the 'white 8 spokes' that seem to come in all the tyre wheel deals, are they up to the trip??

The best rims I have found are the wolf military ones, they are heavy but seriously solid. If you hit a rock in the road, they would take it.The white 8 spokes are not as solid as the oe rims, they also corrode and look rough in a year or so. The wider tyres (235 upwards) affect the turning circle, so the end stops will need adjusting so you don't foul the radius arms.
I would stick with the 7.50's myself, tough as old boots, cheap, easy to replace. Unless you plan on serious mud plugging (don't with a fully laden LWB) Use a faily road orientated tyre, the fuel economy side and the longer lifespan will be well worth it. there are lots to choose from.

For distance travelling go the 235s, so that you can interchange with 7.50s if need be.

265s are nice, I am currently running a set, but they are a bit harder to come by in the middle of no where, but in saying that they are quite common in places that there are heaps of Patrols and 80/100 series cuisers, as these are std fit.

Yep wolfe wheels are the dogs bolloxs, but effing heavy.

235/85 is a perfect size.
as stated it's almost same diameter as the 7.5 x 16 tyre.
wolf is very strong.
I have bended standard LR rims but never a wolf

I run them on my 110 as well.
If you want little more ground clearance and more tyre wall for deflating,you could go for 255/85/16
to my opininion "the" perfect size for a Defender.

I run them myself now on the 110 and the 90 and am extremely happy with them.
But .... tyre choice is close to nothing(just 4 types to choose from,compered to 100's in 235/85)

I had few sets of 235/85 before and they will do the job more than fine.

My 110 Td5 came with 235/85 BFG AT's from new. they are a good size, although i too prefer the 255/85 (which i've got a set of on my 90), an ideal size, not too big, not silly-ly wide, just "right".

the 235's are also the same diameter as the average 7.50x16, so should the worst happen and you need to buy some tyres locally, a standard LR tyre will suffice.

Remember, there are 2 types of military "wolf" HR rim, tubed and tubeless.
