Buying a Landcruiser HZJ79 pick-up
 

Its probably beenasked before, but I am trying to get hold of a nearly new HZJ79 landcruiser pick-up for work/expedition. I have sent e-mails to various Australian dealers but no response. Probably put off selling to someone the other side of the world..Anybody know anyone who has imported one or any body dealing with them? In Sahara overland Chris mentions SA to be a good place to get one...Know of any dealers Chris? Thanks. Did meet a guy in Morocco year before last who had a new troop carrier version from Germany... any one know any in Europe...

Hi, saw a great number of Toys parked up in Gibraltar, apparently there's a company who supplies all the NGOs and UN missions in NW Africa.
Didn't get his number, they're too small for my tastes but someone on the forum must know of him.

Forget Gibraltar - their prices are fantastic but they are striclty Africa and NGO.
You might try French autotrader or buschtaxi.de.
We were thinking of bringing some in and got as far as Zambia (RHD, but not winterised) - could bring it out via Swakopmund - or a place in Hanover that brings in troopies by the container load - and possibly 79s too.

If you want one bought off a govt auction in Australia (good nick very often) - £10k+ will get you a nice one - but then you must add shipping and around 23%.
I have mates there who may do it all for you in their spare time - but no guarantees...
I have another mate who may want to dig around for one for you in SA. They are gagging for troopies there and often end up putting cabins on 79s or even hiluxes.

Chris could you pose the question with your mates... My sister lives in Aus but in the middle of nowhere so she cant help. Dont want to put anyone out, but would be willing to pay them for their efforts. Is the 23 % vat and import tax? We are buying a machine from the US at the moment and thats working out at 17.5%vat + 1.7% import tax.
If these vehicles were more available I am sure they would sell, certainly in our industry (Tree work).

Here`s a link to a heap of online vehicles in OZ, if you do the research get it backed up with your sister being in OZ, even if it means putting the money in her bank account and getting her to issue a bank cheque to pay for the vehicle.

Dont know carpoint, though I've found Trading Post - http://www.autotrader.com.au/ a good spot to get a feel for vehicle prices and availabiliity in Au.

All I recall is we bought in some new bikes from Perth a couple of years ago and it was something like VAT + 4.5% or so. You local Customs & Ecise will know for sure.

Be warned about EU type approval which has tightend up since then - not quite sure what it's about but among other things the basic 79 is non-turbo which may be percieved to kill the trees quicker than you can cut them down.
But if Germany, etc are bringing in 78s then it can't be that hard can it - UK is a lot slacker on all that sort of stuff than Germans. And maybe your line of work is exempt.

Fyi, the newer Au 79s also come with the Amazon engine, as in the book p.78

You'd think so as the gap between a Unimog and a HiCap is huge. A 79 might fit the bill.

When I bought my Landrover Defender back from Aus, I didn't have to pay any taxes, import costs, etc. The two key elements were I had owned the vehicle for a 3 years already and its built to a UK spec so there were no questions about meeting EU standards.

However the two things I'm not sure upon but might help are 1) I have a feeling that you only have to own the vehicle for a number of months and it has to be more than a year old for it to avoid import / stamp duty. 2) I had a feeling that if its a single vehicle import as apposed to a company doing the imports then it could be exempt from the EU standards.

Not 100% on these but think there might be something in them. I've started looking at buying a 1 - 2 year old 100 Series Aussie spec landcruiser, getting it kitted up over there then spending some time driving it round Aus before bringing it back. Thereby a) getting to do some more driving round Aus which I miss and b) having a second hand vehicle over 1 year old which I've owned for several months before I try and import it.

Re the several months ownership, I understand that you have to be able to show that you were actually over with the vehicle, eg, you can't just buy it, leave it at the dealers for a few months when your not even in the country and then ship it back. Again not positive but could be a factor.

There´s also a "Kenyan" 75HZJ pick-up (made in Japan, then sent in parts to Kenya and then assembled near Nairobi)
Last time I was there(2004) they costed new 30000us$

Hi Stan - I'm based in South Africa and Chris asked if I could help - which I'll try to do, if you like. The HZJ79 is available here either with the 1FZ (4.5l petrol) or 1HZ (4.2l na diesel). I think they are made in SA (there is big toyota plant at Port Elizabeth). The only downer is that they are very expensive (R291,000 for the petrol and R307,000 for the diesel). The spec on both is pretty basic - though they did add a bottle holder behind the drivers seat last year!!

If you are interested, I can make some enquiries as to what the pre-tax price would be (for export) and try to get an idea of the costs involved exporting one.

Used car prices here are very high, so I doubt that a 2nd hand SA one would be cost effective.

Interestingly, there is also a crew-cab version of the HZJ79 available here - 4 seats and a shorter pickup section. Have seen a few on the road but don't know much about them - good idea though.

I'm in the UK until monday 21 but can pop down to my local Toyota dealer afterwards (every SA town has one...) to find out more.

A good contact in South Africa would be Stuart Baillie of Baillies Off Road - a real Land Cruiser fan/fanatic. He really knows his stuff and his attention to detail is superb - I witnessed this first hand at his work shop and the LC80 I purchased off him was awesome.
He is a well known Toyota 'fundee' in SA, and his work is well known and respected - I went to him by personal recommendation, and can't speak of him and his workmanship highly enough.
The 78/79's are not built in SA (to my knowledge) but are import - hence the high prices new and used, the double cabs that andybee has seen on the road are fabricated by a company in the Midrand area(outskirts of Joburg), see www.baillies.co.za and you will see photos of Stuart's own double cab which was converted from a pick-up by this company.

Thanks for the replies.
Had a look at the German site and got quite excited as it would be a lot easier getting one closer to home,my girlfriend is German and we use Unimogs for work, so are used to bringing vehicles in from there. However I didnt realise the 79s were not turbo'ed unless Aussy spec. Dont really want to spend 25k on a pretty basic vehicle. So this rules out SA ones too(Thanks for the offer of help). Its really down to the Aussy ones.. got an e-mail from your mate Chris so thanks for that. The import spec / age thing will need some further investigation. I brought a tenere back from there a number of years ago after traveling around , and there was no tax as it was second hand and I had owned it in Aus. The EC spec only became an issue when it needed an MOT, the exhaust didnt have a BS number so it failed...Any one know where to find the spec / type approval info.
