American Car in Africa

Hi,

I am looking into taking most of next year off and driving through Africa. Is it possible to use an American vehicle (with the steering wheel on the left hand side) in Africa? I would want to ship it down to Cape Town. Is this legal or do I need to use a vehicle with the steering wheel on the right hand side? Thanks, this is my first post.

Many African countries (apart from some of the ex-British colonies) drive on the right, so a left hand drive vehicle will be fine.

On top of the above post, lots of Europeans go trans africa in left hand drive vehicles. Don't think there are any countries in Africa which have a limitation on left or right hand drive vehicles. On a different note, you may need to consider what you will do about sourcing parts in the event of a problem with the vehicle. May need some planning lined up so you don't get stuck, such as checking out a good garage that can ship the parts for USA / Europe and costs from company such as DHL. Alternatively, does the vehicle that your planning to use share components with vehicles more common in Africa?
