I was thinking to convert it as well but I was told that you might have a problem with lubrication. The gas in air conditioning also function as a lubricant. And on the other hand in air-conditioning the gas is in liquid state and the compresor is more like a pump .... so I'm not sure if you can do it.

Anyway - I'm still interested in this ... if someone has a solution it would be highly appreciated...

If you do a shearch in google for "OBA" or "on board air" there are lots of companies (mainly in the US) who do kits. Kilby is on of the biggest and most useful websites there.

they do a conversion on the sanden type (rotaty, like the RR A/C compressors) where a grease nipple (or Zirk fitting as they call them) is fitted about half way down the body, and a grease gun can pump a bit in every now and again to lubricate.

also, some people just put a pre-oiler in the air inlet, and an oil catcher on the outlet, sometimes with a connection pipe so it's self filling (although some of the oil does work its way down the pipes... OK for air tools as it'll lubruicate them too, but not too good for rubber tyres)

Lightbulb Reading matter

Hi Steve, welcome. Those of us who have had nothing better to do for the last few years (like me) will know that this question was the subject of (I think) the longest thread on the 4WD tech forum:

http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...ted+compressor

Last post was in 2005 but there's nothing to stop you resurrecting it once you've combed through for the best bits (has to be the air tool powered milk shake blender)

You can also search the HUBB for similar threads, there's some useful stuff here.

If you're handy with a spanner and a welder you'll get something good sorted out.
Happy reading!
Luke

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
