110 rear diff upgrade?
 

I am looking into fitting a 'Detroit Truetrac' to our 300tdi 110 instead of the standard rear differantial.
We are planning to drive south from the uk to cape town will the Truetrac be as reliable as the standard in the harsh conditions of africa?
I like the sound of the torque bias and nothing to engage or wear out of the Trutrac over a locking diff, is it worth it?

Rob if your going to go the the trouble of fitting a true trac you would be better off fitting a detroit locker, at least you will have a proper fit and forget locker instead of just a limited slip. The lockers in a 110 are very good, it will make a huge difference in situations where a locker is needed. The only negative side to them is on a side slope with little traction, as the arse end tends to break away due to both wheels spinning instead of just one, the other wheel that is`nt spinning helps maintain directional stability, but you would have the same problem with both a true trac or locker. I`ve had mine in for a year now and have have no problems at all, it makes a bit of noise every now and then but does`nt not effect the handling at all, just the odd clunk. In a shorter wheel base vehicle it may effect the handling, but in a 110, no problems. They are also easy to fit, 1/2 a day and you will be up and running.

By the looks of your web site your in London, drop me a line off here and you can test drive mine if you want to see what they are like, I also have a spare diff centre in the garage and can show you whats involved in changing it over, its a piece of piss if you have any mechanical knowledge.

have had a look at ashcrofts website, and hidden in a small link on the side is a page on detroit locker FAQs that says there is no 'Trutrac' availiable for the salisbury axle so it would have to be the 'Locker'

Land Rovers are good enough for Trans Africa without limited slip or locking diffs.

Bought a new cable for the manual diff lock on my camper before setting off, with the intention of installing it somewhere along the way; 30000km later I'm back home and one day I'll get round to fitting it...

The pickup I use as a workhorse at home came 2nd hand with a locker already installed, it's a part time 4wd and the locker ruins the turning circle.
It only drives the inside wheel in a turn, the outside wheel frewheels, until everything slips then it's locked up.

Great as a substitute for axle articulation on a vehicle that lifts a wheel at any opportunity; as Robbert says, not really necessary for a transaf.

You should save your money and buy a set of Michelin XZLs (IMO of course)
