For Sale: Daf 4x4 truck overland camper - UK

For sale is our ex British army command/comms body based Daf 4x4 camper. Built 2 years ago for up to 4 blokes to do some wandering in, we've found that we are unable to synchronize our lives enough to use it properly. Taken to Iceland this summer for what turned out to be a successful but woefully short shakedown trip, it's got to go to a better home!

Truck:
Leyland Daf 4x4 turbodiesel right hand drive truck. Taxed as Private heavy goods, and registered as Class 4 Motorcaravan,(inspected and approved by VOSA as such) meaning it's cheap to tax, no tacho card and an easy MOT (same test as a car)
Raised air intake so the engine doesn't breathe dusty air from the traditionally cr#p Daf position behind the driver's side wheel!

Cab:
3 seater with space behind seats for an uncomfortable 4th.
Kenwood Stereo and 12volt sockets for phone/gps charging.
Reversing camera so you don't drive off with the steps down or hit something whilst going backwards!
There is currently NO throughway into the house section of the truck.

House:
4 bunks (2 fold up/down).
Shower/ toilet cubicle with Thetford cassette toilet (hardly used as we operate a "you use it, you empty it" policy!)
165 litre underfloor freshwater tank with Shurflo electric pump and Doulton Ultracarb ceramic filtration system.
Electrics are by twin battery 24v split charging system isolated from main truck electrics and charging when engine is running. (Note: No solar panels as we never envisaged stopping more than a couple of days at a time and the batteries coped with the fridge and lights fine) 12v and 24v power sockets, and a pure sine wave 240v inverter for charging sensitive stuff like camera and laptop type equipment.
Gas cooker - twin burner hob and grill, with integral sink/drainer unit.
Eberspacher diesel burning heater which is a bit noisy, being old, but serves the purpose.
Note there is NO fridge, as I've kept it for the next project.
Loads of storage space under bunks and in shelving. External access lockers for gas, batteries and tools/spares etc.
Interior is best described as functional, some carpet and proper curtains/blinds would complete the ensemble, and possibly the addition of a water heater (other than the kettle!)
Twin fuel tanks with manual changeover valves retaining excellent ground clearance often lost when fitting 1 large tank.
4 psp sand mats.
Twin jerrycan holder currently holding 20 litres of very expensive Danish engine oil!

Truck currently parked 3 miles off junction 5 of M5 motorway (UK)
and is available to view.
Please contact me by phone 07754 967 497, or email sb_vernon at yahoo.co.uk

Asking for offers in the region of £10,500 She's ready to go, and if you've had anything to do with registering anything with the DVLA in the last 18 months, that's damn good value I reckon! Paperwork's all in order and being registered as a motorcaravan makes it a very useable vehicle.

Note a class C licence is required to drive due to the kerb weight being over 7.5 tonnes.

I shall now attempt to attach photos (second attempt)

Just been MOT'd for another year (valid 'till June 2015)

Bump!
Still here waiting to go. I know the licence is a problem for some, which is why we've still got it...

Nice truck and it's a good price, especially compared to a similar one on eblag recently.

does it actually weigh more than 7.5tons or could it be replated?

Unfortunately it weighs over 7.5t. I vaguely remember it being just over eight when it went to vosa, but I've been asleep a few times since then! When I built it we were under the impression that the "loophole" for driving 7.5t+ campers on a car licence still existed (in fact so was the vosa guy - they don't talk to dvla much!) as 2 of the 4 owners didn't have hgv. Otherwise I would have mounted the box direct to the chassis rather than leaving the flat bed on, removed the heavy bumpers and done a few other lightening mods. Now it's built it's not worth it (for me) to strip it all down and start again. When I travel I take my 110 Land Rover, or the motorbike... (incidentally, my next bike trip was going to be to Norway. I see the Harwich-Esbjerg run is closing this autumn thanks to the EU low sulphur ultimatum, but that's for another thread!)
Thanks for your compliments, and the price is negotiable!
Simon.

Sorry folks, haven't looked down here for a while. Currently sold "subject to cleared funds arriving". We have got another, unmodified flatbed registered as a truck Private heavy goods, and another stripped out comms body - for sale for about the £6500 ish range...
Chassis cab weight don't know I'm afraid - see answer in your post further up the forum...
LEZ no chance I suspect - too old.
Thanks for the interest,
Simon.

Now sold. Thanks for all the kind comments.
I know where there's an unmodded truck with stripped out comms body. Currently awaiting mot, but fully licenced/road registered. Chap is hoping for somewhere about £6000 for it. You know where I am...
Simon.
