What's the plan? How much space do you need?

van

We want to travel east; 2, max 4 people. No special comfort is required - we need bed inside ( we can put one in). We dont need a castle, but extra space is appreciated!
I just want to know what are the best choises. Maybe there are some discussions or boards for this topic. My possibilities are mercedes, vw, maybe renult or iveco.. I have been traveling with vw transporter diesel with automatic made in 90ies and had major engine problems... so im looking for reliable van. diy servicability would be a huge plus...

My advise, look to buy a prepared vehicle, either due to cancelled trip or end of trip….

Typically the PO has looked after it, or will tell you of problems. Its often full of accessories / spare parts which all mount up when doing your own conversion.

I guess you’re looking at India, so 4x4 isn’t necessary – just think about fuel consumption….

Cheers
Matt

There where a lot of Ford Transits in Turkey, so that might be worth looking at.

Alternatively, I'd look at a toyota high ace (spares will be available east of the stans) or maybe michubichi L300/L400.

I don't recall seeing much Western Van's in Russia or the stans. The VW's shouldn't be to bad though. Sprinters are good, but by the time they become cheap they're worn down.

Good luck!

i'd go for the older mercs (208, 308 etc) not sprinters. Yes they are slower and noisy but good an solid

Or some sort of Toyota Van (yes smaller but you can get high roofed versions)

Or an Iveco (yes, I'm biased), cheap 4x2 , truck like strength, good worldwide coverage and lots of space

What about this one

People here are mostly into 4x4. Click the link for normal van ideas (and everything else).

Many of the vans mentioned above would be way too small for 4 people.
A long Merc 814 van would do nicely IMO - or track down a better VW

Jst seen on that auction site a 1994 ford transit county 4x4 van ex-police 28040 miles on the clock dosn't look to bad might be worth a look they are not a fantastic off road van but at least with the 4x4 it'll get you through a bit of mud and over some ruffer roads it's up for £3850 I'm sure you could nock them down a bit on that.
Have a look just put in 4x4 vans
