iveco 4x4 rear diff?
 

Hi I am looking for rear diff pinion for 40-10 4x4 iveco, or a complete diff ,the pinion has 9/47 stamped on the end.As iveco no longer stock.Can anyone help?:helpsmilie:

Also looking for 900/16 or 255/100 16 tyres if any one has for sale?:helpsmilie:

I have the parts manual and a screen dump of the specific page. I cant upload because it is too large but can mail it to you if it would help? I find it difficult to believe that the parts are discontinued, not that I want to doubt what you say.

I am looking for similar (not diff parts but source for alternatives, i.e. pattern parts)

I am still here in USA and I have a problem on my steering which I think may only be resolved with a replacement steering box assembly.
Expensive to buy direct from IVECO and more importantly bl**dy expensive to have shipped to me here in US.

I am am hopeful that possibly pattern part is available here, but it is difficult to find a source.

How did you go about finding yours ?

Hi Phil, good to hear you are still OK and upright.....

You don't say what the problem is with your steering box (box?? I assume you mean steering rack!) but I returned from Morocco last year with a lot of play in my Iveco's rack, probably due to a lot of km's of rough and rocky pistes. Once back on tarmac the front tyres stared to wear alarmingly 'cos of the excessive toe-out caused by the play in the rack. I adjusted that out to get me home but the rack needed replacing.

With Iveco prices approaching the £1k mark I sent mine to a reconditioning specialist who rebuilt and returned it in three days for just over £200. The bearings etc are pretty standard so there must be similar specialists in the States who can do the same job. However this assumes that your rack is not too worn or damaged to be rebuilt in the first place! They had standard Daily recon racks on the shelf but unsure whether the 4x4 has a different heavier-duty rack I had my own done.

I have since found someone who has replaced the rack on his 4x4 Daily with one off an ordinary 4x2 Daily van in a scrapyard, it fits OK and works fine but the chances of finding one where you are may be remote.

Hi I went to a local gearbox & diff specialist i know & he found a source even came in a iveco box & half the iveco listed price. How it broke ? dont really know wear & tear is what ive been told it still worked but 2.5 teeth missing.good luck with your search i,d tried a tranmission specialist.(ive heard that the arms on the steering rack are same as citroen c25?)

Nigel - yep my Steering rack has exactly the same symptoms you mention as to when you got back from Morrocco. Too much play and consequently seriously wearing tyres.

have now removed rack and was pleased to indentify it as a TRW, thinking ah, nice n easy for these friendly USA guys to locate a replacement.
Alas, though no. It is proving difficult (impossible !) to cross reference, even thoug the local source is National (NAPA) and list well over 500 steering racks from TRW they do not have same coding system and thus so far unable to locate replacement.
Have tried contacting TRW but they don't answer either telphones or emails !

At moment it looks like probable option is that when Angela flys back to UK next week she may be carrying my old rack with here and she can source a replacement UK side or get serviced.

Good to know the 4x2 rack also fits. Could be much easier to source (and cheaper), though anything 'IVECO' is hard to get here (though apparently in Chile more ivecos than stray cats !

Diff - mmmm that's a worry guys ! mine appears ok, but not sure what to spot even if it is wearing ! I have slight 'play' if you turn wheel back n forth it has maybe 10mm before engaging with diff itself, I don't know if this means it's wearing or just standard. ?????

Moody - did yours actually break ? and consequently were you motionless I assume ? did you have any indications before this point ???

Iveco Steering Rack
 

Hi Phil,

My rack (TRW) was suffering from play in worn bushes in the ends of the housing tube, particularly on the driver's side. You could move the rack shaft up and down quite a bit where it emerges from the housing (inside the rubber gaiter). This allowed the shaft and track rod to the steering arm on the hub to move back a bit, increasing the toe-out. It was also allowing oil to leak out of the housing, filling the gaiters.

The reconditioner ( Power Steering Specialists - Western Power Steering ) told me that Dailys are prone to wearing the actual rack teeth on the pinion and the rack itself quite badly and if so, it can't be reconned unless they are replaced too which makes for an expensive job. I seem to remember the service exchange Iveco racks are recon units too so that's probably why they are so pricey. He reckoned it was difficult to get good servicable used 'core' Daily racks for reconning because of this.

However my rack shaft was OK so all that was replaced as far as I know were the bushes at the ends of the rack tube which cured the play. The reconditioner reckoned the bushes were pretty standard items, perhaps in general rather than being specific Iveco parts. I think they are just simple plain bronze or steel bushes, not bearings. They gave the whole rack a once-over with new gaiters etc but the bushes were the main parts replaced.

So if you can find a power steering rack specialist over there they may be able to replace these bushes from off the shelf just to cure the immediate problem. Failing that, I would imagine a competent machine shop would be able to modify the nearest standard relacement items available to fit your rack housing, or even turn up a new pair of bushes from some bronze stock. Even if they should be proper bearings, it would at least get you back on the road at reasonable cost for the rest of your trip!

I've now heard of three 4x4 Dailys which have blown the rear diff, but all were hard used, high miles or overloaded (or all three!). One WM had been used as a tipper truck for carrying spoil on groundworks, the other was ex Dutch Army (WM) and the Dutch owner admitted he'd searched long and hard to find one that was "less battered than usual" to base his camper on, and I'm fairly sure Kev Moody's camper is quite high mileage. So I'm not too worried about it, Phil....! However I replace the oil in both diffs every year with the proper SAE 85W/140 EP gear oil just to be on the safe side!

Sorry for late reply.
diff didnt brake just suddenly started whining in maroc,but still drove it another 5,000 km before i got around to stripping it, the problem was caused by the leading egde on 1 of the pinion teeth breaking.Cause anyones guess,but most likely poor metal or insuffient harding?
There was no sign of damage or wear on the crown wheel but slight wear on 2 other pinion teeth.
So, my advice change the oil every year as i did,carefully checking for any metal in the old oil & hope yours wasnt cast on a friday.:stupid:

Steering rack - update
 

Hello people.

Finally I have given up with the guys here in States, truck has been motionless for 4 weeks and through a series of incompetence and a splash of 'cannot be bothered' my rack was eventually sent (supposedly) to a reconditioning house but 10 days later it arrives back here in Santa Fe having just had a journey around the country (it never actually got to the recon place).
Western Power Steering (thanks for tip NIgel) seemed to be the most efficient and fairly priced of the UK guys i telephoned and to be fair to Gary there he also helped me source some other parts (at a good price) and he was able to ship them on a 4 day service (excellent!) and a small bonus was the 0% VAT as he was shipping out of the country.

So, though not here yet, I have a recond rack on the way at £170 and a carriage cost of approx £150.
More expensive than getting fixed here, but there was never any guarantee to that option and more importantly at least now it IS getting fixed.

Learnt a few interesting bits while searching :
1) TRW - apparently went bust few years back, still exist but they are just impossible to get on the 'phone and when you do it appears they cannot assist. Nobody EVER returned my calls (despite promises) and not a single Email link ever replied back (i sent to every person listed across not just states but also europe (including Italy)

2) IVECO does have an appointed dealer here for North America 'Toms Truck Centre' . But, they have very limited stock, it seems from talking to them certain vehicles were imported here during the 80s and they carry 'routine' spares for these vehicles. Mine is 1995. It's not what was imported. & NO they cannot get spares from Italy through their supply chain for me !

3) Computers are the bain of 'unusual sourcing'. It's amazing how many people i've tried here and if the vehicle or the part number does not exist on computer screen then that's it ! they can see no solution. There's no available logic of how to solve the problem ! (ahhh america!)

MOODYBLOO - thanks for diff advice. Also, you mentioned earlier post you had found source for 'pattern parts'. Is this a source you can share with a fellow ?????
