FS : Landrover 101 Expedition Vehicle

Can be viewed at Eastnor this weekend or in Leicester, UK (near J21 of M1)

Contact Rich on 07880 715696 for more details, price etc. photos up next week.

A unique Landrover 101 Ambulance converted into an expedition prepared camper. The specification is listed below.

Landrover 101 Ambulance Bodied. Chassis cab built in 1977 and built into ambulance in the early 80’s. Into service with British Army 1982. Cast in 1998 and bought by me in 1999. Converted into a camper in 1999 for trip to Libya.

Engine is a Landrover 300Tdi – Approx 22-24 mpg on road, can fall to 14 mpg (UK gallon) on soft sand . This engine was bought brand new in 1999 and has covered approx 60,000 Klicks. This is not a ratty discovery engine transplanted into a 101 but a brand new engine that has been looked after irrespective of cost. It has had oil changes at least every year at least and more when on expedition. The cam belt was replaced 2 years ago and has done less than 6000 Klicks since.

Gearbox is the standard 101 4 speed LT95, it was replaced by a military recon box in 1994. At the same time the transfer box was upgraded from the standard needle roller bearings to taper roller bearings. This upgrade was designed by landrover Australia when they used this gearbox with a large diesel and found the transfer box weak. This is an expensive upgrade but if you look at trip reports of diesel 101’s then you see that transfer box problems are common. New clutch 2 years ago, old one was fine and is now in spares kit.

101 Steering has been replaced by a Landrover power assisted steering box. The standard 101 steering box is a weak point. The PAS option makes the truck a lot easier to drive and increases reliability.

Tyres are 10.5/20 rather than 900x16. This size is widely available worldwide (I have spoken to the marketing manager at continental tyres who said he would get me tyres anywhere). Truck comes with 5 wheels and tyres plus a spare brand new tyre. The unimog wheels have had the offset altered to fit the 101.

Battery Split charge system via a national luna split charge system with battery monitor. Isolates the vehicle battery (tractor battery) from 110 amp hour house battery. On roof is a 40 watt solar panel which via switch in cab charges either house or vehicle battery. This is enough to park up and run lights and fridge for several days.

Heat exchanger in heater circuit allows you to run a shower using the heat produced by the engine when pumping water through the exchanger.

The back axle is fitted with a Detroit Locking differential. This makes the truck able to get almost anywhere, it beats many a defender.

Twin aluminium fuel tanks custom built by allisport, approx 120 and 160 litres, totally independent. Filled separately and chosen by switch on dashboard. Double jerrycan holder on drivers side. Jerrycan holder on back door.
Fitted uprated prop shafts

Diff guards fitted to both axels

Modified to take standard defender brake servo.

Custom Snorkel built by Allisport

Exterior accessed lockers houses spare wheel, air filter & fuel filler for passenger side tank and fluids locker for oil, brake fluid etc.

Spot lights above windscreen, work lights on front and also on back door. Map reading light in cab for navigator, fluro light for general cab lighting.

Interior is fitted out as a camper. Double Bed, sink, cooker, Fridge. The fridge is a minus 40 12 Volt, 40 litre capacity. Gas 2 ring burner with grill. Water system is fed from a 20 litre jerrycan. It can be fed direct to the sink or via a general ecology water filter system (brand new filter supplied).

Box in cupboard, bolted thru floor for storing valuables.

Gas storage under sink.

Plenty of storage for items including drawers for small items , cutlery etc.

Tool cupboard

CD player in cab, with remote control. CB radio. Seats have 4 point harnesses

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
