Overland ready Range Rover Classic in South Africa

Fully overland ready and equipped 1980, SA registered, Range Rover. I’m the third owner and have owned her for 12 years. Due to a young family the Rangie has not been on any long trips in the past 5 years and won’t be for the next 3 years at least. So as much as I hate to do it, I know I need to sell her.

1. White in colour
2. Winch
3. Spot lights
4. Additional twin radiator fans on a manual switch
5. Dual battery system
6. 100amp alternator
7. Newish high speed starter motor.
8. Power steering reconditioned.
9. Radiator 100%
10. Electronic ignition
11. Engine
a. Original low compression 3.5 V8 (capable of running on the worst quality fuel you might find in Africa)
b. Both cylinder heads, timing gears, chain, tappets completely rebuilt 600km ago by Solihull 4x4 in Jo’burg SA, together with new 3.9 camshaft.
c. Bores and bottom end were checked and found to be good
d. New HT and LT leads, coil etc done at the same time
e. Total cost of over R10 000.
f. New oil pump.
g. Original Stromberg carbs in perfect condition – the car starts first time every time.
12. Transmission - 4 speed gearbox and transfer box reconditioned about 6 years ago with limited mileage since then.
13. Wiring redone converting from 3 fuse system to 8 fuses for the different circuits.
14. Suspension
a. Old man emu rear springs
b. Polyair rear airbags (imported from Australia)
c. Some Old man emu suspension bushes
d. LR heavy duty front springs
e. Newish Gabriel Kubu shocks
f. Front skidplate
g. Both propshafts reconditioned in past few years
15. Interior
a. Hidden built in safe
b. 240v invertor for charging camera’s etc
c. Power socket in rear for fridge
d. Jackalberry canvas seat covers
e. Fire extinguisher
f. Radio CD player with 4 speakers
g. NO aircon
h. Packing rack with slots for 5 wolf packs.
i. Space for Engel 40l fridge (fridge not included)
16. Rear bumper
a. Galvanised Twin spare wheel carrier
b. High lift jacking points
17. 6 x original Rostyle wheels with BFG mud terrain tyres.1 tyre still new with an average 50 – 70 % tread left on the rest (good for at least 50 000km). Some wheels are a little scruffy with peeling paint and surface rust
18. Built-in inboard 80l fresh water tank and 140l petrol tank. Add this to the standard 80l fuel tank and you have 220l of fuel. Good for over 1000km of driving under most African conditions.
19. Custom made full length aluminium roofrack (different to pics) together with Eezi Awn roof top tent plus shower enclosure and gas bottle holders. Includes Eezi Awn awning.
20. Comprehensive list of spares plus some tools plus factory workshop manual, parts catalogue and original owner’s manual.
21. High lift jack + mounting
22. Thomas air compressor in engine bay.

Some travel history on the Rangie.

I did various trips to Botswana and southern Mozambique when I first bought her. Then I did a 20 000km, 6 month trip in 2001/2002 through Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Western Tanzania, Zambia and Botswana. Apart from a torn suspension bush and a brake pad that went missing! plus the inevitable routine maintenance she ran with no major problems the whole trip. In 2003 we did a 7000km trip up the entire Mozambique coast. We lost reverse gear at the start of the trip else it ran with no faults at all. Gearbox and transfer box were reconditioned on our return. Since then we have done short trips in SA and 3 trips to Botswana but the car has done very little mileage in this time. Total mileage is unknown but estimated at below 250 000km. I bought her from someone who had owned her for 9 years, he having bought her from the first owner. He used her as a third vehicle for towing his boat to the coast only, so his claim that the mileage was 190 000km at the time seems fair. I have changed the speedo as it was broken and didn’t take note of the mileage at that point.

She’s a good, honest overland truck with all major components reconditioned and with limited mileage and is ready for another overland trip. Spares are readily available in South Africa and in East Africa too. Kenya was the second biggest market in the world for Rangies after the UK and the Rangie chassis and engines were used in the Discovery Series 1 of which there are still plenty around.

It's very hard to sell her (she was also our wedding car and my wife is fighting the sale!) but I hope someone will buy her and continue using her for what she was built to do.

Contact Philip philv@iafrica.com or +27825523385. Car is in Jo'burg Sotuh Africa. Price ZAR49 000 negotiable.

Hi
Lots of people, who don't know about this website, come to me looking for vehicles in Africa. Take a look at my website: Africa 4x4 Cafe to see if I can be of any help.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
