Wanted in South America (near buenos aires) vehicle for under $5000usd

Hi,

My girlfriend and I are looking for a vehicle in south America. Ideally something we can sleep in that has 10,000 miles in it. But we'd consider anything.

We've got a budget of $5000usd

We're British tourists and would need something we can legally take out of Argentina

We could also collect from Uruguay, Paraguay, chile or southern brasil.

Any suggestions please let us know. Tabowden AT hotmail DOT com

Oh, and we'd want the vehicle in the next month or so if possible!

Thanks!

phil here !

Hi 'Whisky' (and heads up n hi to dave n rich !!)

Angie and myself are back travelling in south america. we returned a week ago.
We have flights booked to return to UK in April.

'Whisky' - i know your original post stated "next month or two". Probably April is too far in the future for your plans. But . . . . . well my truck is a solid workhorse, 4x4, fully kitted and rugged enough to fit right in for the driving over here! and my price is well within your budget.
I do have a couple of other people interested but until nearer the time obviously nothing is firm.

It is unlikely i think now to find a vehicle as this is the beginning of the season over here. However, i'll keep you posted if we meet anybody that is selling.

good luck.
Phil.

The search continues

Thanks monster and rclafton for the information.

Phil, your truck looks great but I hope we'll find something sooner.

We're going to head to Uruguay to see what's for sale there and how far our Spanglish will get us!

If nothing comes up we'll probably try southern Brazil as we hope that we'll eventually end up near northern brazil and may find it easier to enter there when it comes time to sell it?

The postbus forum looks active so we may well find something there.

Phil, I hope you continue to have a cracking trip!

word of caution

vehilces over here are expensive and you do not get much for your money.
that is why most people prefer the expense of shipping.
an example . . . . chatting last week to the local park warden here in argentina. he was vey keen to show us his just bought vehicle.
for $4 thousand US he has bought a disel 4x4 BUT it is 1994. has done nearly 400 thousand kms. was a people carrying minibus. it is a KIA very rough round the edges and needed preparation.
he is happy coz to him this was a good buy.
in the uk this kia would be worth about 500 quid.

theres a good L300 for sale in Panama.
might be worth negotiating with them to justify the cost of shipping to colombia [ US$ 1500 to 2000 ]

good luck.
keep in touch.

phil.

How to buy a vehicle in Paraguay

Hi Phil and all,

Just a quick update. We managed to buy ourselves a VW campervan in Asuncion, Paraguay. Whilst the paperwork takes time it is reasonably straightforward and I would say a reasonable option for anyone looking for a vehicle in South America

I've added a post for other expats that want to know the process here:

How to buy a vehicle in Paraguay

Hope it helps someone!

Safe driving people!

excellent

well done whiskey, glad you have got sorted and thanks for the information, very helpful.
We have just met a german couple who bought a 1999 ford mondeo in Santiago.
cost 4000 euros (steep!) but the process he said was simple enough though took them over 4 weeks.
obvious advantage of buying a 'local' vehicle is the option to resell at the end.

whiskey - what's your plans now ?
we're about to enter Bolivia from Atacama.

check my pages for waypoints download for Patagonia - some great free camps and up to date !!!!
