Hi prospective overlanders!

Here we have for sale at just £6995 ono my 80 series 1990 Toyota Landcruiser 4.2 TD VX Limited, which I have driven half way around the world and back on my overland trip. See my website for details overlandcruiser.net

Much has happened to this car since I bought it on Ebay less than 2 years ago. It's been expedition prepared, then left the UK in February 2007 to cross Europe to Tunisia, then Libya, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India (shipped to) Malaysia, Thailand, Laos (shipped to) Eastern Russia, Kazakhstan and Western Russia before returning to Europe and the UK in July this year, 64,500kms (40,000 miles) later. It passed its MoT needing just - wait for it - a new headlight bulb, a new rear number plate bulb, a new rear fog light and a new front number plate which I had cracked anyway.

Preparation work - Fenced off rear load area, with a raised rear deck and metal drawer. Full length galvanised roof rack, made by Brownchurch. High lift farm jack and heavy duty jacking points. 120cm wide roof tent, made by Eezi-Awn. Raised and hardened springs with heavy duty shocks (Dobinsons). Steel wheels with BF Goodrich A/T tyres (about half worn). Load securing rails and cleats.

Known faults/service history - the car was given a full and through service before I set off from the UK. Once on the road, all was well until I destroyed all 4 shocks by driving too fast on a bumpy road in Egypt. This was my fault, but nonetheless Footloose 4x4 and Dobinsons between them did a sterling job in getting replacements out to me under warranty. Later, a piece of metal broke off inside the injection pump in Turkey, so that had to be rebuilt with Nissan Patrol injection pump innards as a 'get you home' measure, Turkey being one of the few places where it's difficult to get Landcruiser bits. This lasted all the way to Pakistan aka Landcruiser Heaven, where the pump was rebuilt with Toyota Genuine bits and the injectors were renewed. Additionally, the front steering swivels were renewed together with various other front axle components and the steering box was rebuilt - it was leaking like a sieve prior to this but now hasn't leaked a drop in 40,000 kms. In India, both batteries were replaced. Apart from that, the car hasn't let me down once. Every 5000 kms I have changed the oil & filter, greased the UJs, rotated the tyres and blown out/replaced the air filter. At present, there seems to be a loose connection inside the dashboard, for the red lights (all of them) seem to flicker on and off occasionally. There is also an annoying squeak coming from the speedo cable. The roof rack was originally facing the other way, so in Pakistan I turned it around to make the roof tent extend frontwards as you can see from the picture. The rear legs had to be bent inwards to fit, with the result that a month or 2 later, at the end of the Manali-Leh highway in India, I discovered that they'd cracked. Some idiot in Leh got to work with an electric welder for a few measly rupees and the (dreadful) repair lasted as far as Calcutta. Clearly something better was needed, so this time it was gas welded. Not pretty, but the welding work has held up no problem ever since over roads which were at least as bad as India.

This car and I (and my girlfriend for 9 months of the trip) have been through an awful lot and I shall be sorry to see it go, as if closing a door on this exciting phase of my life. But a car like this simply isn't practical in London and it would do more good in the hands of someone who is doing a trip like mine. Even if you aren't interested in buying the car, I would be glad to talk to anyone who has any general questions about overland travel (but please make this clear at the outset!)
