Coming from Spain or read our previous visit
to Portugal
28/2/98 Back across the border into Portugal, again no formalities,
and along the Douro Valley. This is where most of the port grapes are grown
on terraced hillsides in slate soils. It's also where most people who live
in Porto, (Portuguese for port) Portugal's second largest city, come for the
weekend. We passed over 100 bus loads of port sipping, vineyard visiting tourists.
We also passed hundreds more port sipping tourists in motorcars. Portugal
has the worst record for vehicle accidents in the EU and I am sure
this winding valley road claims many on weekends after seeing the extra curves
the fortified drivers put into the roads.
