THE PREMIER OVERLAND ADVENTURE TRAVEL EVENT

Horizons Unlimited 5th Romania Travellers Meeting - Cabana Bodvaj

Friday August 30 - Sunday September 1, 2024

It's All About Overland Adventure

"Adventures can take any shape. They can take place on the motorcycle, a bicycle, in a small car or a 4x4 monster. For us, some of the most interesting adventures have been to produce guidebooks about Romania. The work on this project has surrounded us with extraordinary people, and this has encouraged us to try a new adventure: a meeting of travellers in Romania.

The 5th Horizons Unlimited Romania meeting will take place in the Baraolt Mountains, in the hearth of the Szekely Land. The meeting will be about sharing stories in a mountain hut, learning and inspiring people to travel further that they have imagined. Two and a half days we will be in be in the middle of nature, with the best food and great people.

This event would not be possible without the awesome participants. presenters and crew. Friends, we hope to see you all again this year!" Călin Nucuță

Horizons Unlimited Romania Event Schedule

The event is taking place from Friday August 30 - Sunday September 1, 2024.

The Registration Tent will open for check-ins at 10:00 am Friday. The first presentations will begin at 3 pm. The event will draw to a close at Noon on Sunday.

Please don't arrive earlier than Friday!

Over the course of the event there'll be talks, demonstrations, workshops, discussion groups, challenges and competitions, with many presentations being repeated so you won't miss out.

As well as hearing inspiring stories of overlanding adventure from around the world, you'll get the low-down on preparing for your journey, navigation, first-aid, photography, filming and a host of other essential topics. Whatever your past experience or future plans may be, there's something for everyone.

Draft schedule can be downloaded here approximately 1 week before the event.

PLEASE NOTE: The schedule is subject to change at any time - all the presenters are volunteers and travelling, thus they may be delayed or unable to get there. Some may have anxiety attacks and be unable to perform! ;-) And sometimes travellers show up unexpectedly with great pics and stories, so we try to fit them in!

Presenters at HU Romania 2024 include...

Workshops and Tech Sessions below

LOTS of presentations to come! As people register to present we'll list them here.

How about you? We're all here to learn, and there's LOTS to learn! We want to do more presentations and seminars - but we need volunteers to give them! Any topic you can contribute having to do with motorcycle travel, maintenance, planning etc, lasting 20 minutes or more, would be great. Please contact us here to volunteer.

PAST Presenters at HU Romania have included...

South India: Up and Down on a Royal Enfield Himalayan (Skype Presentation) On and off the beaten path (a.k.a. How to get lost going where you wanna be)

MARIAN VULPE's inner core is made from the souls of past nomads. He wanders, he gets lost, and very often gets sidetracked. But he never strays too far from his nomadic core... always looking to get beyond borders, limits, the "no, you shouldn'ts", and even the "you shoulds".

The plan was simple - fly to Mumbai, meet friends, hop on a Royal Enfield Himalayan and go to South Goa. Part of it came true - yet the route to there and back was full of ups and downs. Ended up crossings of the Western Ghats multiple times, riding on empty (for India) beaches, riding through jungles, popping up in peoples backyards and pretty much getting lost in a creative way :D. All the while met wonderful people, happy, curious, and never afraid of tomorrow - which is the most lovely part of being in India, by far.

RADU PALTINEANU is an adventure cyclist and keen explorer. He has cycled the Americas from Alaska to Patagonia from 2015-2018, and now he's exploring on a recumbent trike in Australia. Wild areas and remote places feed his passion.

Iran: A Mix of Mixtures

SILVIU FLOREA's important motorcycle trips include: (2010) From Romania to the border of Saudi Arabia and back; (2013) a nine-month tour of South America of 32,000 km; and (2022) a two-month trip from Romania to eastern Iran and back covering 14,000 km.

During the pandemic and the war from Ukraine, I felt the need to conenct with my instincts, my inner animal. so I decided the solution to that was an adventure in an unknown territory like Iran. I left Romania while there was still snow and reached Iran with the heat. Without a plan, I wanted to be open and discover Iran without any preconceptions. I was in the mountains, valleys, deserts, in cities big and small, and mosques... but also in the "jungle" in northern Iran. There is no doubt that the best part of all are the people of Iran who went beyond kindness and hospitality. Even as I left Iran thinking I would not go back, after two weeks of being at home, a thought entered my head: I should go again to this beautiful country! :)

Getting Lost in Tunisia /
Surviving Rally Albania

PAVEL KUNC is a Czech traveling since 2017. He started by riding from the U.K. to India and back, and got stuck for five months in Morocco during COVID. He races in rallies and plants trees in Albania to support local communities.

1) Getting Lost in Tunisia
Chasing dunes, salt flats, and Star Wars sites

The great plan of the north Africa tour to Tunisia and Algeria was quickly ruined by the COVID closure of the Tunisa/Algeria border, even before I managed to leave. The COVID restrictions got me denied on the one ferry and almost deported from Tunisia. That was a beginning of the wonderful two months in a country which I now can't wait to return to. From the lush green north with its beaches, down to the Sahara passing by the historic oasis and Star Wars film sets, and ending up in the desert. I also learned the lesson that a 200-kg bike + luggage is tricky on the Tunisian dunes.

2) Surviving Rally Albania
Practical introduction to rally racing for adventure travellers

After racing in the Dinaric Rally in Croatia twice, male-moto style, I had an opportunity to take on the six-day Rally Albania. I'd like to share practical information how to start with the rallies, how it works, and what one needs to race and navigate on the roadbook rally.

Riding in Central America
A recent trip to Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala and buying a bike there

MAHSA HOMAYOUNFAR has been traveling on a motorbike since 2011. Visited 69+ countries and five continents only on the bike and 100+ countries in total. Many of them as a solo female traveller. She is a polyglot, cosmopolitan, and a serious people lover.

I flew to Mexico, bought a bike, and started riding in the southern part, then in Belize, and then in Guatemala. I will describe how the bike purchase is, what expenses are involved, how to plan a trip in that area, and explain roads, cultures, anecdotes, dangers, nature, tips, paperwork, food, health...

KRZYSZTOF KUCHARCZYK is a solo motorcycle traveller. This kind of travelling lets him fully concentrate on exploring. He likes his own pace and spontaneous planning of the route. Until now, he travelled across Europe, but Magadan is still waiting for him.

1. Trans-Carpathia Solo Tour 2019
First solo motorbike off-road tour through Romania

This will be a story of my first motorcycle trip which was originally a couple of days, but, in the end, happened to take almost three weeks. Mainly offroad/backroads and some really great views.

2. Bosnia Enduro Trail 2019
Crossing Bosnia using some backroads and shortcuts!

After my first success in Romania, I decided to do some serious exploring of Bosnia, which happens to be an extraordinary location for outdoor explorers!

A Journey in Portugal While Still a Beginner
8000 km, 16 days, 11 countries...because dreams are never too far

I fell in love with a bridge. And because long distance relationships don't seem to work, I left to see it. It would have been my first long trip, but it was more than that. It showed me things never go as planned and it gave a taste of how addictive riding days without end can be.

Travels to Central Asia

After trip to Magadan, my heart keep loving eastern countries. The question was, which way I have to go. One day my friend ask me for trip to Central Asia, I make decision that moment, YES. The plan was simple, somewhere to Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia and most challenging route in Turkey, D915 Bayburt. So, let's go amigos.

Ride Across Africa /
Drive To Mongolia

Ride Across Africa
South Africa to Romania on a motorcycle

In early 2018, after almost two years of riding across Ireland I took the decision of quitting my office job to do something totally different: see the world as it is, raw and unhindered. After around three months of riding from Cape Agulhas to Romania on the western coast of Africa, a near death experience in Cameroon, getting malaria in Benin and other such things, I can safely say that the journey fulfilled its purpose.

Bike down on a very muddy road

Drive To Mongolia
An '84 Skoda 120LS with four people crammed inside. What could go wrong?

After the experience in Africa, I went on the Mongol Rally towards (ahem) Mongolia. Some of the highlights include running out of water in the desert in Turkmenistan, the warmth of the people in Iran and having to ship the car on a trailer from Irkutsk to Sankt Petersburg.

After getting burnt out from working in IT behind an office, GEORGE CIOBANU decided to ship his motorcycle to South Africa and ride it to Romania.

Ride to Mongolia
1 motorcycle, 90 days, 30 000+ km

Every great dream begins with a dreamer - and this is how my trip started back in 2019. Following the silk-road, it took me three months to get to Mongolia. This presentation is more about the people I meet on the road and my inner-journey. It was the adventure of my lifetime!

ADRIAN IORGU is an adventure biker traveler. His favourite quote is: "And in the end it's not the years in your life that count, it's the life in your years."

For beginner and intermediate adventure riders: common pain points, tips, and more

I want to motivate people to act - start dreaming, start planning, start riding. I will cover the different stages of having an adventure: (1) Common problems; (2) How to plan your trip; (3) How to prepare - tips and tricks; (4) Start riding, plan your effort, shoot media responsibly, return home safely; (5) When the trip is over, what to do with the XXX terabytes of media you have just shot/filmed.

MIHAI TICA got his motorcycle license pretty late in life at 28 and dived right in! His first motorcycle trip was to India only weeks after he got his license. He went there for business and rented a motorcycle. First ride, first crash.. about 800 kilometers later a SUV cut him off, he flew for a few metres and visited the local emergency hospital. Fast forward a few years, Mihai visited some very interesting places - Nordkapp, Mongolia, Georgia (twice), India (twice), Bosnia and Herzegovina. He is currently planning to ride the Greece portion of the TET. He enjoys shooting and editing videos. You can check out his YouTube channel.

Adventure Algeria by Tuareg Rallye
Finally back as a famous Rallye country: people, landscapes, and adrenaline

More than 20 years ago the last Dakar Rallye came through Algeria. Since then, however, Algeria almost disappeared from the touristic world map. In 2017 the Algerian state-owned motorsport federation invited us (the organisation team of the Tuareg Rallye) to visit this beautiful country and evaluate if the world´s second biggest Rallye would like to relocate to Algeria. After exploring the possibilities, we were conviced. So the preparation started and finally, in March 2019, the Tuareg-Rallye took place in Algeria. Amazing tracks in wonderful landscapes, including the biggest erg of the Sahara desert. What an experience! And so different from the surrounding countries. I will cover the exploration, preparation and the Rallye event itself which was a great success for eveyrone, not only for racers. :-)

Andreas Fetzer, Tuareg Rallye bikers

ANDREAS FETZER is from Germany and has travelled over 500.000 km on motorcycle in Europe, Africa, Asia and USA. He is a highly experienced off-roader having participated in the Red Bull Erzberg, Enduro-Championships and Desert Rallyes in Tunisia, Morocco, and Algeria. He is a motorcycle tour guide and Rallye organiser.

Membership - Show you're proud to be a Horizons Unlimited Traveller!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love overland adventure travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events such as this one (18 this year!); we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, the HUBB or to receive the e-zine. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.

You can join at a reduced rate as part of your meeting registration. Note that new Memberships with your Meeting Registration are applied as of the Meeting date or as soon as possible thereafter, not earlier, unless you make a special request in the Comments box when you register.
