Tea with Bin Laden's Brother
- an illustrated journey through countries where you won’t get travel insurance.
Ridden, written and illustrated by Simon Roberts.
Paperback,
96 full colour pages
(June 2010) ISBN 978-0-9566035-0-0
Book Description:
Reeling from the shock of a personal tragedy, biker and illustrator Simon Roberts loaded his bike and set off on a life-affirming road trip half way across the world to Kathmandu, Nepal, land of promise and mystery.... Pushing the bike off the ferry at Calais, France due to starter motor failure - on Day One - he knew the trip was going to be anything but uneventful.
Over the next seven months he pushed East, through the motorcycle workshops of Europe, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan and India and finally into Nepal to be met by the Maoist uprising... He encountered wild dogs, wild men and wild women. From the desperation of a failed driveshaft in Baluchistan close to the Afghan border to the joys of a decent coffee in Delhi, euphoria, despair and maniacal rickshaw drivers were his daily companions...
"Throughout the 7 months, I drew cartoons feverishly, documenting the Highs – and Lows – of the trip, and these hundreds of drawings have finally been collated into this unique book. In fact it’s more than a book, it’s an 'llustrated Motorcycle Diary travel journal comic strip.'"
Review:
‘Evocative, honest and inspiring, it's all brightened up by a great design and amusing comic book graphics which all help set Simon's book above the average motorcycling travelogue’. Chris Scott - "Adventure Motorcycling Handbook"
Signed copies are available direct from the author at www.teawithbinladensbrother.com You’ll also be able to take a look inside, see how the cartoons were developed, check out the route and much more.

Review by Glynn Roberts, Horizons Unlimited UK Meeting Organiser;
"Sam Manicom's new book Under Asian Skies has a quote on the back cover that says, 'Too often... I would hear men speak of the miles covered that day, rarely of what they had seen.'
Sam has the skills of the story teller and this book easily transports you into three years of journey across Asia. He manages to bring the sounds, scents and heat of Asia to life without wordy overkill and he has obviously researched his historical facts carefully.
As with his first book "Into Africa," he attracts all sorts of dramas most travellers wouldn't encounter. He nearly gets killed in Australia, twice! Catches dengue fever in Thailand and is nursed back to life by a prostitute, gets arrested in Madras, in the middle of the plague that is hitting India . He battles with the red tape that anyone who has tried to get their bike in or out of India will tell you about - myself included.
In places Under Asian Skies is sad, and in others it's outrageously funny - look out for his battle with the Sydney port officials and the bus ride in Indonesia.
All in all this is a really good read, whether you have been across Asia, or are planning a trip.
This is true travelling on the cheap and not your everyday story.
Recommended."

Marocco Fuori Rotta
by
Simone Monticelli
In Italian only, 308 pages
Book Description
"Most of the public worldwide travel agencies propose to the travelers who want to visit the Morocco a trip close to Zagora, Merzouga, or the Erg Chegaga dunes, that is the area usually called commercial south.
However, watching the Morocco map, the true south of the country seems obvious to be different. Why?
To understand this I drove to the discovery of Moroccan Sahara, a charming land that appears like a desert of sand, powder or cliffs but that hides something more, too. I wanted to discover a region whose people are able to adapt to a very wild nature, talking with them and watching at their behaviours and learning their traditions.
This is a long run across 5000 kilometers, not void of hard time but full of smiles and many interesting panoramas, too.
A man, a woman and two motorcycles go back to their home with many answers and the feel to have lost the hope to recover their health from the disease of the Sahara 's travellers: The Badly of Africa."

Mi Moto Fidel : Motorcycling Through Castro's Cuba
by Christopher P. Baker
Hardcover (February 2001)
Book Description
"Christopher P. Baker's 1000cc BMW Paris-Dakar was as much a state of mind as a form of transportation. Gaudy and gargantuan, the lipstick-red motorcycle attracted attention, sparked conversation, and made new friends for Baker throughout his freewheeling, 7,000-mile peregrination of modern Cuba.
After three months astride his powerful moto, Baker brings back a vivid report that is a savory and surprising blend of romantic adventures, keen observation, and clear-eyed commentary. Introducing a remarkable cross section of Cubans from farmers and fishermen cosmopolitan habaneros chafing under Castro's faltering rule, Baker captures the vivacious national spirit that has beguiled visitors for centuries.
Packed with insight, humor, and some surprisingly candid encounters, Mi Moto Fidel will take you on a trip you won't soon forget. It's an exuberant, often unexpected, always fascinating look at our nearby unknown neighbor and the irrepressibly friendly and resourceful people who call it home."
Mondo Enduro
by Austin Vince and crew
"Round the world by 350cc motorbike, through Siberia, North and South America and Africa. This is the expedition
that has inspired hundreds of others. Ewan McGregor certainly learnt from watching the Mondo Enduro DVD. He avoided the
Zilov Gap - the 392 mile section of Siberian tundra and swamp where Mondo Enduro ended up man-hauling their bikes..."
Highly Recommended - Austin is always hilarious, and this is his usual standard - a great read; Grant

Monks and Motorcycles: From Laos to London by the Seat of my Pants 1956-1958
by
Franklin E. Huffman
Paperback (2004)
Synopsis:
"In 1956, 22-year-old Frank Huffman embarks on a journey that will take him from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia to the exotic Orient, and eventually around the world. In this fascinating tale of adventure, Huffman shares his experiences and emotions during two years as a French interpreter for a community development team on the Plain of Jars in Laos, Indochina.
At the end of his tour in Laos, he buys a motorcycle and sets out for Europe, with only a National Geographic map of Asia and the optimism of youth as his guide. He takes us along for the ride as he
climbs the fabled Angkor Wat in Cambodia,
cycles up the road to Mandalay in Burma,
floats up the Chindwin River on a river boat,
is chased by a motorcycle-hating cow near the Taj Mahal,
participates in a mutiny on a ramshackle bus in the Pakistani desert,
thumbs his way across Iran to Turkey, and
carouses through Europe in a Simca with pilfered sleeping bags and C-rations.
Throughout this marathon, Huffman offers keen insights on the culture and society of Laos and the some 25 countries he passes through, and also provides trenchant commentary on subsequent events in those countries. Huffman's self-deprecatory humor and his undisputed mastery of the English language make Monks and Motorcycles a delightful read."

Motoqueros -
Mit dem Motorrad durch Latein amerika
by Arno Backes, in German only, €14.95 plus shipping and packing
"Motoqueros - Mit dem Motorrad durch Lateinamerika
"Written by Arno, with contributions from Sian and others, this book is in German, and follows our 18 month
trip of 55,000kms, from the beaches of California to the most southerly city in the world. As we ride down Central
America, past Mayan ruins and steaming volcanoes, read how we then cross into South America, battle through the
endless Pampa in Patagonia, along the Altiplano to the heart of the Inca kingdom, ending after 18 months in the
city of tango.
At almost 340 pages and with over 150 photos, both colour and black and white, the book really gives you a feeling
of participating with this journey, even if you can't read German! Some photos have been used previously in Sian's
blogs, but most are brand new."
"Thye's trip from Lake Oswego to Chile in 1963 was quite an awesome
experience. Although I'll probably never have the nerve to do a similar
run, it wouldn't be the same as it was back then anyhow. Anyway, I feel
like I've been there having read the book. They tell me Thye is a
respected BMW dealer in Washington now. His experience with the machine
certainly qualifies him as such. Thanks to the folks at SoundRider.com for
tipping me off to this book."
Motorbike Tours Of Europe: France (Edition One)
by Peter Wills
Paperback (August 2009)
Map of France, 18 tour cards to fit your tank bag, and 10 highly detailed routes to ride through France.
"The book has some useful touring information presented with a
sense of humor. It could use a little polish and some color pictures
would make it more appealing. Overall it will save the reader some time
in planning a motorcycle trip to Arizona and is worth reading."
Motorcycling in Australia
by Peter Thoeming
Sftbd.
Product Description - from Whitehorse Press
"Who knows the ins-and-outs of riding a motorcycle in Australia
better than Peter "The Bear" Thoeming, founder and editor of
Australian Road Rider magazine. This new book is his way of introducing
"the greatest motorcycling country in the world" to fellow
"mates" so they may get as much fun out of riding there as
he has. The stories, anecdotes and asides which accompany his sound,
practical travel advice make the book not only useful for planning trips
but hugely entertaining just to read. As Grant Roff, a friend and fellow
Aussie, says 'If you can't hit the road with your tent strapped to the
back of your bike and a map in your tankbag, the next best thing is this
book, three hours to kill, an armchair and a bottle of Long flat red.'
But, if you are ready to go, this guide has everthing you'll need. It
includes not only general information about Australia and how to troubleshoot
in an unfamiliar country but also an insider's pick of the best roads
to ride state by state. The book will be invaluable, particularly to
first time visitors."
Reader review - Andy Deen writes:
"As the name suggests it covers just about everything you may
need to know about biking around the 'Great Southern Land'. It also includes
a section for overseas travellers visiting Oz. Peter is a widely respected
Biker/Journalist here in Oz, and if this book is anywhere near as good
as his magazine I think it will be a worthy resource for anyone touring
Oz by motorbike."
Motorcycle Diaries
: A Journey Around South America
by Ernesto Che Guevara, translated by Ann Wright
Paperback (October 1996)
Midwest Book Review:
"Full of high drama and comedy, The Motorcycle Diaries is the
story of a remarkable road journey in the words of a 23-year-old medical
student known as "Che". There are fights, parties, and serious
drinking. There are also moving examples of Guevara's idealism and solidarity
with the oppressed, in this vivid record of what for others would have
been the adventure of a lifetime. No biographical study or understanding
of Che Guevara is complete without the reading of his diaries recording
his thoughts as he journeyed around South America"
"The complete resource for motorcyclists in search of America's
most famous highway . . . Route 66, The Mother Road. You'll have everything
you need to make a safe, enjoyable trip down Historic Route 66 on two
wheels. Three turn-by-turn guides to the old road. See exactly how to
do it from Chicago to Los Angeles or from Los Angeles to Chicago. A complete
listing of motorcycle dealers along the Route. Laws regarding motorcycles

The Route 66 Traveler's Guide and Roadside Companion
(1995), by Tom Snyder
"John Hermann's fourth edition of Motorcycle Journeys Through the Alps & Beyond is the complete resource for any traveler to this part of Europe. Now covering more area than any previous edition, John “King of the Alps” Hermann brings nearly 100 trips to life. Everything has been updated: Hermann's fun-to-read text has been thoroughly refreshed, with more new trips in the Pyrenees and the Picos de Europa mountain ranges, the maps now have mountain relief backgrounds to view the exciting changes in topography, and Hermann has added spectacular new pictures.
Anyone considering or dreaming of a European trip on two wheels needs this book. Riders of all brands of bikes the world over have kept Motorcycle Journeys Through the Alps in their tank bags ever since the first edition in 1993. And no wonder: all of the important roads and passes are described and critiqued. Every region of the Alps is covered: Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Italy, France, and other special Alpine lookalike places such as Corsica, Slovenia, and the Pyrenees are included. Each trip has a detailed route description, easy-to-follow maps, and unique photographs—all brought to life by Hermann's informed and witty narration. Local customs, history, and amusing travel anecdotes dot every page to enrich your journey."
ldcleve from Milwaukee WI, USA:
"I took John's first edition of this book and a map and rode the
Alps and the Dolemites for ten days. We reviewed the routes and stops each
morning and evening. This is a great resource if you are traveling in
the area. I brought three other books on this topic and left them behind
at hotels as the trip progressed, as I realized I did not need any
other resources. Use this and an internet translator site (like
Babelfish)and you can make your reservations in some of the same hotels that
Edelweiss and other formal tour groups use. This new edition expands on the
first by adding Corsica and updating the Alps/Dolemite section. It is a
great read. John is the recognized authority on this area for those of
us that don't speak other languages well, and don't live there. He is
also correct in stating that the riding in this region is addictive."
Motorcycle Journeys Through the Appalachians
by Dale Coyner
Paperback (2004)
Editorial Reviews from Motorcycle Consumer News:
"...this book would make a very useful traveling companion "
Hencequently "Ben" from Bend, Oregon, USA:
"For me there are three parts to a good trip - the preparation,
the adventure itself, and then the memories. This book has helped me a long way in
achieving all these pleasure points. The maps and text are wonderful; the crafty
photo's with tasty captions peppered appropriately throughout this guide left my partner
(who does not accompany me) recommending more sights than I could handle. A keeper, if not just for that."
"Motorcycle Journeys Through Baja is a staggeringly comprehensive,
witty and erudite travel guide to Mexico's Baja Peninsula. His treatment
of the subject is instilled with a sense of adventure and an obvious
affection and enthusiasm for riding a bike in the Baja. The detail he
provides is exhaustive, describing mile by mile every road of any consequence
in the whole region as well as some inconsequential ones. He covers virtually
every roadside attraction, monument, mission, cantina, quinta, gas station,
geological anomaly, and fuzzy patch of roadkill on the whole dusty peninsula.
Much of this information is presented in journal style insights and impressions
that make the book an entertaining read as well as a thorough and accurate
travel guide."
Motorcycle Journeys Through California
by Clement Salvadori
Paperback - 320 pages 1st edition (April 1, 2000)
Editorial Reviews - Book Description
" This book is about roads--sweeping roads high along the coast,
lonely roads amidst desert splendor, and sporting twisties through grand
forests--superb routes that offer some of the best year-round riding
in the world according to moto-journalist Clement Salvadori.
Welcome bits of history, commentary, and notes from the author will
give you plenty of good excuses to stop, as well as things to ponder
as the miles roll by. And should you be in the right place at the right
time and wish to really take in the local motorcycle scene, you will
learn which famous runs and roadhouses typically bring together like-minded
riders to kick tires over coffee."
Readers Comment - Randall Carter from So Cal
"GREAT! In this book the author selects an area (san diego, so
cal, central ca, san francisco, no cal, high desert, low desert, etc)
then shows about 3 detail SCENIC loops (trips) from 50 miles to 200+
miles with great detail and gives options for side trips not listed.
It is up to date, printed in 4-2000. It makes me want to go on the trips
listed!!!"
"California is motorcycle heaven for motorcyclists. With its year-round riding, superb routes through mountains, coasts, deserts, grand forests, and an enthusiastic and supportive motorcycle scene, it's easy to see why. In this updated and expanded new edition, Clement Salvadori, one of motorcycling's most popular journalists, guides you along some of the lesser-known motorcycling gems in California, as well as pointing the way to the unspoiled places of Mexico's Baja peninsula. Routes are often clustered around base camps, which means you can leave your luggage and explore an area unencumbered for several days. The book is filled with detailed maps, photographs, easy-to-follow directions, and tips on where to stay and what to see and do. Some of the best trips include: The Central Coast and Big Sur Highway, San Francisco and the Bay Area, Lassen National Park and the Northern Sierra Nevadas, Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, Death Valley, Palm Springs, Julian and Eastern San Diego County, and of course the fabulous Baja California."

"I
have made it my mission this year to enjoy the beauty of my home state. My husband and I both ride our own bikes and we decided to take a "home" vacation this year.
This book was essential. With the routes right there in black and white, restaurant reviews, hotel advice, road challenges a rider may face, etc..this book more than paid for itself by saving us time and money!"
Motorcycle Journeys Through New England:You Don't
Have to Get Lost to Find the Good Roads
by Martin C. Berke
Paperback (February 1992)
C.C. Motorcycle Newmagazine, October 1992
"Motorcycle Journeys Through New England by Martin C. Berke is
a northeast motorcyclists dream. Even in the information age, it's hard
to believe the quality and wealth of info in this narrow booklet. . .
. The book combines information of interest to motorcyclists with sights
of interest to all...experience a wealth of different culinary delight...
include southern parts of Connecticut and Rhode Island, but also trips
to Lake George and Lake Placid in northern New York State...strongly
recommend this book to anyone with two wheels and a love of salt spray
and green mountains."
Amazon.com Reviewer - a reader from USA, September 1, 1999
"Must-read material for New England riding - with basically one
day to plan my trip (so I am a bit last-minute these days), this book
was an indespensible boost in the good-time department. It is a great
book to get you started, and provides all the necessary clues to create
your own journeys. After a couple of days, you get to understand the
way the maps illustrate the individual roads, and Marty's book helps
you identify the best kinds to explore. Sometimes the routes get confusing,
but that just adds to the adventure. Makes a great gift, as I told the
friend who got it for me.
Motorcycle Journeys Through the Southwest: You Don't
Have to Get Lost to Find the Good Roads
by Martin C. Berke
Paperback (February 1992)
Keystone Motorcycle Press, September 1994
"In the 420 page softbound book, Berke has scouted the region's
best campgrounds, parks, scenic landmarks, and restaurants, always with
an eye on value. Each chapter, or trip, contains useful listings of restaurants,
lodgings, places of interest, and other helpful tips. Over eighty maps
accompany the text, making navigation a snap, and over 255 illustrations
highlight many of the attractions.
If you have a taste for the offbeat, and want to avoid traditional
tourist traps, while experiencing the Southwest's finest motorcycling
roads, then Motorcycle Journeys through the Southwest is for you."
Amazon.com Reviewer: a reader from Northwest Suburbs of Chicago, March
4, 1999
"It's like a virtual motorcyle trip. This books gives some pretty
cool descriptions on different areas in the Southwest including Southwestern
Colorado. My husband and I are familiar with the Colorado chapter and
it was as though we were going through it again. Except it was
in words and in our minds. My husband is going to take the recommendations
and
ride from the Chicago Area to the Taos New Mexico area. I will
follow 2 days behind him with kids in tow. The author also provides valuable
information on watering holes as well as places to eat. In desert areas
you want to be prepared as to where the last gas station is.
The author also gives explicit details on road conditions which makes the
trip a
lot easier to palette knowing where the "bad" spots are. Either
you choose to ride gingerly through it or go around. I highly recommend
this book. It's a good read and it contains lots of valuable information."
Motorcycle Journeys Through Southern Mexico
by Neal Davis, Lisa Dionne (Editor)
Paperback 1st edition (August, 2001)
Editorial Reviews - About the Author
Neal Davis was bitten by a travel bug early in life and
has spent his years seeking a cure all over the world. As an accomplished
sailor and pilot, Davis was also able to ensure that his wife and two
children were infected as well, and together they shared many adventures
on land, sea, and air.
Years later, when he had retired from owning a small business,
Davis took to the street on an organized motorcycle tour of the Alps--and
he quickly saw the appeal of two-wheeled travel. Since then, Davis has
ridden in 21 countries in nearly every corner of the globe.
Davis now spends nearly 200 days of every year on the road, living
the life we all dream about. Although he has been a long-standing fan
of Mexico since the early 70s, he still rode more than 18,000 miles South
of the Border in the last year in preparation for this book, most of
them on a Kawasaki KLR 650.
Motorcycle Touring and Travel: A Handbook of Travel
by Motorcycle,Second Ed.
". . . there's a lot to like. First-time tourers may find the
push they need to hit the road, and experienced travelers will likely
find that this touring manual is worth the $19.95 plus shipping as insurance
against pre-trip forgetfulness."
Reviewer: b selby from SF Bay Area United States, July 30, 2001
"Excellent investment - I bought this book before taking a 2,600
mile two week tour of seven western states on my SV650. I have owned
8 motorcycles, the first in 1973, so I thought I knew a lot. It was a
very good book with lots of advice that saved me the purchase price many
times over. It is a small investment that pays excellent dividends if
you are planning a trip, unless you have a great deal of touring experience.
I also recommend it if you are considering a bike but don't know what
you want."
Reviewer: Brian Hill from Laguna Beach, CA USA, September 6, 2000
"Save your money. This is a book for non bike owners, who want
a cursory glance at the topic. The author spends too much of the book
on non related areas. Engine types, selecting a bike, maintenence, and
not enough real meat about the title topic. There are real issues related
to traveling by two wheels in safety and comfort, with all the stuff
you really need, over a long distance. These subjects are only superficially
explored. And anyone who has ridden some of the machines he suggests
would make good touring platforms, would know that they would be extreamly
uncomfortable over any prolonged ride. Perhaps the authors idea of a
tour is a one day hop to someplace, if so, most of his selctions might
be adequate, but that really isn't the context of "touring".
Another reviewer put it well when he said this book woulod make a better
series of magazine articles which tend to be superficial in nature anyway.
There are some good points made in the book. Unfortunately for the money
they only comprise 20% of the material."
Motorcycle Vagabonding in Japan
by Guy De La Rupelle,
Paperback (September 1999)
Book Description
"Didn't think of Japan as a motorcycle destination? Think again!
Resident author Guy de La Rupelle has found terrific roads to wander
on in the "Land of the Rising Sun." Sample all the wonder,
beauty, mysticism and culture that Japan has to offer without the hassle
of crowds, traffic, stress, and consumerism. For example, try out the
tropical island of Kyushu, with trees reminiscent of rain forests and
Louisiana bayous. Or how about Hokkaido, dubbed "the rider's paradise"
by the bikers who go... "
"It's the story of an American who traveled to India in the 1970s to study its culture, religion and philosophy. After 12 years of criss-crossing the country on buses and trains as a monk, he gave up his monastic life and married an Indian doctor who later gave him a 350cc Royal Enfield Bullet as a birthday present. This is the story of his journey through India, revisited by motorcycle over dozens of rides. A thoughtful read, giving insight to a continent which is both misunderstood and magnificent."
"This is a practical guide for motorcyclists taking their own bike abroad, tourists wanting to hire a bike or scooter while away, and people joining one of the growing number of all-in overseas riding tours. It covers everything from bike preparation and route planning to road safety, law, local regulations, extreme conditions, and emergencies. There is regional information about Europe, Scandinavia, America, Australasia, the Far East, and Africa."
Reviewer: BD "bigdave2020", UK, May 7, 2004
"If you are travelling in europe this book is a reasonable source of information with a acceptable amount of detail regarding road laws and legal requirements, including the new EU members. However for the the rest of the world (the riding further afield section) this book is very very disappointing and big let down."
Motorcycling Stories
by Piet Boonstra
Paperback
Reviewer: sseale from New York, United States, May 7, 2004
"This book is basically a diary of Boonstra's long adventure tours.
Some of the conditions he rides in are extremely
harsh, and made me think that he was crazy for
continuing. I read this book cover to
cover, but you don't need to. Each of his trips
is a separate chapter. I would definitely recommend
reading the first two Alaska trips; it
is during these trips that he is learning about
adventure touring and he has the most interesting
experiences (from a riding standpoint).
On his second trip, he gets cought in a blizzard
and also does quite a bit of riding in the snow!
It was worth the read and really opened
my eyes to what you can do on a motorcycle."
"Ralph the mouse revs up a dream come true--his very own motorcycle. Living in a knothole in a hotel room, young Ralph
has seen plenty of families come and go, some more generous with their crumbs than others. But when young Keith and his parents
check in to the hotel, Ralph gets his first chance to check out. He has always fantasized about venturing beyond the second
floor, maybe even outside. Curiosity overcomes caution, and Ralph must have a go at Keith's toy motorcycle. Soon, the headstrong
mouse finds himself in a pickle, when all he wanted was to ride a motorcycle. Lucky for him, the boy understands how it is.
When he discovers Ralph in his thwarted attempt to abscond with the toy bike, Keith generously encourages the rodent to ride. "

I've had a read-through myself, and was very impressed with the depth,
and ease-of-use of the book. Peter's done a great job on a big subject
- a job I wouldn't have minded having myself - riding one of the great
motorcycle countries of the world. Brings back good memories of our all-too-short

"...he decided to start his trip in London, England, to ride up to
Nordkapp, Norway, and from there to continue overland to
Australia, and to return to Canada via Los Angeles.
The book describes the matters specific to motorcycle adventure travel:
the documents required, the maintenance of the bike, road and riding conditions
as they affect the motorcyclist, border crossings, transporting the bike
by airfreight, breakdowns and repairs, accommodation and security for bike
and rider. An appendix lists the choice of motorcycle, its (sic) accessories,
modifications, and trouble spots, and the itinerary, with exact distances
and the names of secure hotels... The writer demonstrates that anyone with
a strong desire to do so can indulge in motorcycle adventure travel. All
that is required is a reliable motorcycle, a bit of money, and a lot of
time."
Obsessions Die Hard: Motorcycling
the Pan American Highway's Jungle Gap
by Ed Culberson
Paperback (1996)
Editorial Reviews:
"Obsessions Die Hard chronicles Culberson's determination to fulfill
his dream. A retired U.S. Army officer, Culberson wanted to ride his
motorcycle along the Pan American Highway's entire route between Alaska
and Argentina, but in eastern Panama and western Colombia's Darien
region the road is broken by an 80-mile gap filled with jungles, rain
forests, rivers, and swamps, forcing travelers to detour around it by boat or
plane. The area is so inhospitable and unexplored that a myth about its
impenetrability has evolved over the centuries, and a curse aimed at
Darien trespassers shrouds the region. But the Darien Gap, known as "el
tapon del Darien"--the Stopper, didn't stop Culberson's dream. It turned
it into an obsession. Culberson set his sights on riding Amigo, his BMW
R80 G/S, the entire length of the Pan American Highway--including the
Darien Gap, a feat never before accomplished by a motorcyclist. He
suffers failure before meeting success, encountering killer bees, arrest by
a corrupt law officer, cycling injuries and back-breaking labor to get
himself and his motorcycle through the torturous jungles and swamps. A
story of one man's struggle with his own obsession, Obsessions Die Hard
is an amazing tale of human endurance and perseverance in the face of
staggering obstacles."
Customer comments, November, 1997
A reader from California, USA- "For the die-hard motorcycling adventurer - This book definitely is not for the average reader, or traveler. It is an account of one man's life-long obsession to ride a motorcycle through the most impenetrable land mass on the face of the planet. If you have no interest in what endurance motorcycle riders call "adventure touring," skip Mr. Culberson's book. But if you ride, and sometimes ride hard and long, or off-road, and have wondered what it might be like to ride where no man has gone before, you will find this both a riveting adventure story and a practical guide to this exotic and dangerous sport. Simon Gandolfi
Paperback - 336 pages (
1 September, 2008)
Book Description:
"A Septuagenarian Odyssey Simon Gandolfi has never been one to grow old gracefully and following two heart attacks he decides not to rest up, as many might, but to ride the length of Hispanic America on a 125cc motorbike. And why not? His wife may have plenty of reasons why not, but used to the intrepid septuagenarian's determination to complete any plan he comes up with, she shrugs her shoulders and waves him goodbye. At 73 years old, Simon Gandolfi sets off from Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico to embark on a five and a half month journey culminating at 'the end of the world', Ushuaia in Tierra del Fuego. For Simon this is a journey of discovery. Leaving behind the safety and sanctuary of friends and family, he is truly alone but along the way he meets and talks with rich and poor, old and young, officials and professionals, agricultural and industrial workers...."

100,000 Miles of Solitude
by Maarten Munnik
Paperback
Book Description:
"For more than three years Maarten Munnik travelled on his motorbike around the world. From
Europe through Asia to Australia, and from South America to Alaska. 100,000 miles of culture, adventure and most of
all butt-pain. Every single day would be worthy of a chapter in this book, but there is just no printing-press large
enough to print a book like that. Therefore you will have to settle with this collection of 'tales from the road'.
Well aware of his own 'unsophisticated' view on the world, Maarten tells his tales the way he experienced them
himself. He is no hero, not even a real adventurer. As he says himself: He is just stupid and naive and that
combination leads him into, through and out of many unusual situations. Sometimes dramatic, sometimes hilarious,
but always different."
Enduro Adventure world wide tour, Latvia to Melbourne

All that we saw, all that we came across, all we went through – documentary road movie 'On the Way of Freedom'. Also we've added more video material about pre-journey to the Cola Peninsula and photos from expedition."
Grant: Review - great DVD, beautifully done and well worth watching for anyone, especially if you want to follow their route.
Review from D. Deo "ddeo" (Chicago, Il) on Amazon.com
"One Life to Ride is truly a remarkable book about a remarkable journey to the Himalayas. Remarkable because after reading the book I thought ' wow is this my country '? It made me want to go out and do something out of the ordinary.
There is great compassion, humour, spirituality in Mr. Harisinghani's writing .The description of his encounter with our jawans touched me to the core while his story of the nawab of Sindh was truly amazing. Great story telling!"
"Now here's a brilliantly talented writer who, with no great prior preparedness, has the guts & gumption to bike across from one end of the country to the other, ready to deal with situations as they emerge and tell us things we rarely hear about this wonderful land called India.
One Life to Ride is a marvellous book. I haven't read anything better in a long long time."
One Man Caravan
by Robert E. Fulton Jr.
Paperback Reprint edition (January 1995)
A terrific book, right at the top of the list. Recommended. (Grant)
Rider, February 1998
"My own favorite kind of read is a good story about someone taking a bike somewhere where the road is difficult, and the county strange. A granddaddy of this genre is One Man Caravan, by Robert Edison Fulton, the superbly told tale of a young Connecticut Yankee circling the globe on a Douglas flat twin back in the early 1930s. That's when having an adventure was having an adventure, and there was no phone system to allow you to contact the nearest U.S. Consulate, let alone call home."
The video of his trip is "Twice upon a Caravan" and available from Whitehorse Press here.
"Recently compiled from his original footage filmed on the 1932 trip, this one hour documentary is hosted by Fulton himself, now in his 90s. To see the world as he saw it almost seventy years ago and to hear this thoughtful man reflect on it now is an amazing, not-to-be-missed experience. Twice Upon A Caravan has been given a rave review by Larry Woods on CNN’s Across America. '…an hour long portrait,...really first-class stuff. It looks like a National Geo presentation of 1932.'"
This is a great video - not to be missed! Grant

Glen Heggstad

"In 2001, martial arts–trained biker Glen Heggstad began a journey from California to the tip of South America on his motorcycle and made it as far as Colombia, where he was kidnapped by local rebels and held captive. Three years later he set out into the world on his bike again, this time searching for truth on his own terms in a world that had become strangled by a climate of fear. Starting his trip in Japan, he traveled through Siberia, Mongolia, Europe, the Middle East, South East Asia, and Africa, stopping in more than 30 countries to deliver his message of the real United States, as he knew it. Synopsis:
In 2008, Gordon May set off on an 8,400 mile ride from Manchester, UK, to Chennai, India, on his 1953 Royal Enfield. Despite encountering intense heat, suffering a crash in the Baluchistan desert and battling against some of the worst roads and driving standards on the planet, Gordon and his old Bullet did make it to Chennai.
In Overland to India Gordon describes how he restored his beloved motorcycle, the build up to departure, the larger-than-life characters he met and how he tackled the many challenges that came his way. He also recounts the more personal highs and lows of life on the road. Above all, Overland To India is a heart-warming book that reveals that there is much human kindness and hospitality to be found, sometimes in the most unexpected places and situations.
Review:
What I really liked about Overland to India was the sheer determination of the rider. The description of how he prepared for the trip is a great template for anyone wanting to achieve a goal, travel-wise or not, and I would recommend Overland to India on that basis in addition to it being a travel book. Gordon’s love of his motorcycle shone through too; he often thanks it for getting him to his various destinations along the grueling route and I liked reading about his running repairs. I think these descriptions and how he catalogues daily life on the road will be of interest and use to other motorcyclists. I felt his joy, his euphoria, at being out on the open road. I also felt his exhaustion. When Gordon suffered a crash I could almost feel those bruises and also his fear following an attempted highway robbery. What was also really striking was the generosity, friendliness and humility of many of the people he met along the way, who Gordon describes with real warmth. It’s uplifting to discover that it’s a welcoming world out there. Overland to India is a lesson to all of us who have a dream and want to pursue it. Inspiring. Judith Coyle

The Perfect Vehicle: What It is about Motorcycles
by Melissa Holbrook Pierson
Paperback - 346 pages (November 1997)
A Horizons Unlimited reader wrote in to recommend this book:
"QUOTE from book 'The hard-core lover of motorcycles, the one
whose head turns at every growing sound that promises a bike will soon
flash into view, can't help it.....'
When I read this sentence I was hooked on this enigmatic book which
never reaches a conclusion but travels several roads, some real, some
virtual, some with endpoints, most are circular. The author connects
with most things 'bike', but aims at a mainly female readership. There
is a history of bikes and those who ride or have ridden them; there is
technical talk; there is practical advice; there are touches of humour
from a womans' perspective, 'Did you ride that motorcycle here all by
yourself? No, I carried it in my head.' The best parts of the book are
devoted to the journeys. Those days and nights spent on a bike, following
the road and all its highs and lows. She finds love and fear, politics,
feminism and above all the reality of what it all means to women who
appropriate what is still a 'man's thing'. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend
anyone to read this book, woman or Guzzi rider. It has passages of lyrical
and spiritual writing with a return, every so often to a realism. Rather
like riding, don't you think? - by Biddy Fisher - note: a version of

Pilgrimage on a Steel Ride: AMemoir About Men and Motorcycles
by Gary Paulsen
Hardcover - 179 pages (November 1997)
Editorial Reviews from Amazon.com:
"At 57, with heart disease and a bad case of wanderlust, Gary
Paulsen decided to get himself the motorcycle of his dreams and take
it to Alaska from his home in New Mexico. "The bike held me like
a hand, caught me and took me with it so that the engine seemed to
be my engine, the wheels my wheels," he writes. "It was
singular, visceral, unlike any other motorcycle I had ever ridden.
In some way it brought me out of myself, out ahead of myself, into
myself, into the core of what I was, what I needed to live. And I
knew, my core knew that I would never be the same again, could never
be the same."
Paulsen writes in a blaze of macho invective, about men who like
drinkin' and butcherin' and guns and "poker with no-limits stakes,
or stakes high enough to make you intensely focus
on everything there is--and there is everything--in
the game." But when he's writing about the spicy characters
he's encountered in his wide-ranging travels around America, this
short memoir, for all its exaggerated manliness, turns out to be quite funny."

Purple Mountains : America from a Motorcycle
by Notch Miyake
Paperback - 256 pages (September 2001)
From Whitehorse Press site:
"A man who has seen much in his life sets out to see a country
which still leaves much to be seen. No question, he should travel by
motorcycle.
Spinning out the steady rhythm of the yellow line in his wake, author
Notch Miyake takes advantage of a change in his circumstances to experience
the United States from the seat of his BMW GS. In intimate contact with
his environment, Miyake relates his experience of contemporary America
in lyrical prose, narration, and in dialogue with the people he meets.
His perceptions become sharpened by lonely miles, a naturally keen eye
for detail, and the splendor of the land he uncovers. Those of us who
ride beyond our comfortable, safe, and familiar surroundings will nod
in recognition at Miyake's narration of the many scenes familiar to solo
motorcycle travel.
An incredible journey of a soul questioning what to do with his new-found
freedom from the everyday race, Miyake's ride becomes an exploration
of America and its people that is adventurous in its scope."

Fills in some of the questions and gaps in Jupiter's Travels, and more...
Recommended. (Grant)
Book Description:
"Adventures never come to an easy end. The beached sailor gazes
wistfully at the horizon. The house-bound wanderer pines for the road
to Xanadu. Simon wound up his epic four-year motorcycle journey around
the world to choose marriage and domesticity, but found it harder to
end the journey than it had been to begin it. In Riding High, Simon recounts many untold episodes, both dramatic and hilarious, from his "Jupiter"
travels, and he interweaves them with scenes from his later efforts to
lead a settled existence. The contrast makes it all too clear that great
journeys become an expression of life itself, and that, once begun, they
continue as long as there is life left."
From the Publisher
"Simon is a versatile author who covers diverse subjects, but
his preference is writing about his own travels, and the insights they
provide. His earlier book, Jupiter's Travels, which is a best seller
in Europe, has had a cult following among American motorcyclists
for many years, but is only now becoming recognised here as a travel
classic. Riding High is a natural companion and sequel to that book."
"RIDING THE WORLD offers aspiring globe riders expert advice on traveling the world by motorcycle. From the only motorcyclist to have circumnavigated the globe four times, literally riding to the ends of the earth-from Dead Horse, Alaska to Ushuaia, Argentina; from North Cape, Norway to Cape Agulhaus, South Africa.
Specially outfitted motorcycles have carried him over one million miles and across 24 time zones. This unique book has 125 color pictures with sections on routes, budgeting, motorcycle preparation, shipping, sleeping, eating, whether to go it alone, what to take, how to find sponsors and network possibilities."

The Road Gets Better from Here
by
Adrian Scott
(February, 2008)
Book Description from Adrian Scott's Website:
"With virtually no experience and absolutely no support, Adrian rides a basic stock motorbike 20,000kms across 9 countries in 3 months to fulfil a lifelong dream... He sets off from the bleak, windswept former gulag gateway city of Magadan in a remote corner of Siberia, but before the day is out he crashes badly, breaking his bike and seriously injuring himself. He is completely alone... At every turn, Adrian is adopted by a vast array of characters each with stories to tell and who, extraordinarily, expect nothing in return; tough Siberian truck drivers, frontier road workers, border guards, desperate villagers, drug-addled soldiers and crazy modern-day traders, each insisting that he join them in their homes to share their lives and most of their provisions. It is these encounters which provide such a rich and compelling subtext to his extraordinary journey."
"You will find this book full of the writer's insight, and thought
provoking at the same time. She includes numerous pictures in black and
white and hand drawn maps now and again. One gets a big picture of how
and what she is feeling as she absorbs the beauties of the Northern
Lights, the icy creeks and mountain tops, even the rain brought out
rainbows."
"From Devon to Northumberland and from East Anglia to Snowdonia these 42 detailed routes take you on some of the most interesting roads for riding imaginable. Roads that make you want to go back and ride them again and again - from little used mountain passes with tight hairpins to open, twisting, traffic free enjoyment and all through stunning countryside. The routes cover all types of terrain and vary in length from as little as ten miles to about 80. Some are included for the riding challenges they offer, others for the fantastic views, some take you to out of the way and remote places you would be unlikely to find unaided, whilst others are close to major centres but all will give you that wonderful sense of freedom and enoyment that can only be gained from riding."
"The only travel guides designed entirely for the motorcyclist. Detailed route plans are provided for 25 of the most glorious roads for riding imaginable. Roads with scenery to take the breath away, roads to get your knees tingling, roads so twisty you'll want to go back and start again! But above all, roads to ride for the sheer enjoyment of riding. The routes take you from the Pyrenees, via the Picos mountains to the borders of Portugal.
Advice and information on how to get there, local customs and history, things to see and do along the routes, places to stay and refuel the rider and bike are all included. There are even Spanish phrases for most things motorcycling from tyres, brake pads and spanners to 'can you repair this'!"
"From Campbeltown to Dalwhinnie and from Arklow to Galway these 37 detailed routes take you on a wonderful journey through the Highlands and around the wonderful scenery of Ireland. Here you will find roads that twist and turn as they snake through mountains and alongside lochs, roads that make your knee itch to feel the tarmac and above all roads that will make you want to come back for the sheer enjoyment of riding. The routes vary in length from about 70 to as little as just a few miles. Some are included for their sheer remoteness, others for the technical challenges they present and all have the stunning landscapes associated with Scotland and Ireland and provide the sense of freedom and enjoyment that can only be gained from riding."
The Road to Gobblers Knob: From Chile to Alaska on a Motorbike
by Geoff Hill
310 pages (September 15, 2007)
Review on Amazon.co.uk by Dave the Ulsterman, 5 June 2007:
"A very enjoyable read recounting a seat of the pants adventure born of frustration at the daily grind of office life. No slick production this trip , no eye to the DVD sales or TV show, just two guys with the guts to get off their backsides to live a little on their own wits & with the kindness of strangers to get them through.
No doubt an understanding of the deadpan Ulster sense of humour helps but is far from impenetrable."

An incredible story. In trying to exorcise the demons brought on
by the tragic and untimely death of his fiancee Bealby decides to
drive a motor bike the length of Africa. His route takes him down
the western countries and back up via the eastern side, a trip of
20,000kms. Such a journey inevitably throws up horrors, delights,
surprises and incredible hardship. Bealby handles all with great humour,
strong resolve and an unshakeable belief in his 'guardian angel'.
On one level this is simply the story of an incredible journey,
but it is also the story of rediscovery, of the author finding his
life again, finding reasons to believe, things to live for.
I really enjoyed this book and have already ordered his next one
'Pagan Song' as a result.

She's a Bad Motorcycle: Writers on Riding
by Geno Zanetti
Paperback - 275 pages (October 2001)
Production Description:
She's A Bad Motorcycle collects the writings of those who have sought
that freedom. From the genre-defining—and exploding—Zen
and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance to Chasing
Che the motorcycle has inspired a startlingly
rich, unabashedly romantic body of writing
that celebrates the risks and exhilaration of
the journey to self-discovery.
Andy T from Seguin, Texas, USA said on HUBB
"I picked up an motorcycle anthology, called "She's a
Bad Motorcycle", and while most of the stories are in the outlaw
biker genre, one story stood out so much that I actually called the
publisher to try and find other titles by the same author, to no avail.
The story is called "Girl on a Motorcycle" by Rachel Kushner.
It's the story of how she was influenced by a former boyfriend to
ride the Cabo 1000, an unofficial street race from Tijuana to Cabo,
down the Baja peninsula. While she is obviouly venting some anger
(well, a lot of anger) at her ex, it is a great look at the motorcycle
lifestyle, from a womean's point of view, without glossing over some
of the contradictions that go with it."

Sparring with Charlie

Paperback - 289 pages (April 1996)
Production Description:
When Christopher Hunt set off in search of Vietnam's notorious
Ho Chi Minh Trail, he hardly expected to end up on a rickety, Russian-made
motorcycle navigating 5,000 kilometers of paths rarely traveled by
tourists and on roads missing from maps.
Chris K from Winchester, Hampshire, UK said on HUBB
"One book on motorcycle travel I would recommend is Sparring
with Charlie by Christopher Hunt, very funny account of his travels
in Vietnam by Russian 2 stroke"
Spurensuche
by Jörg Becker, Andreas Hülsmann
Paperback - 192 pages (November 2005)
In German only - from a tour on the Canning-Stock-Route in Australia.
Storm : A Motorcycle Journey of Love, Endurance and Transform
- ation
by Allen Noren
Hardcover - 340 pages (May 2000)
Synopsis:
"Allen and Suzanne were seasoned travelers, and when Russia's
Baltic states opened up for visitors in 1993, they eagerly embarked on
a trip there. What they couldn't foresee were the record-breaking storms,
desolate landscapes, and most significant, the cracks in their relationship
that the trip would expose. Part love story, part edgy travelogue, and
at times darkly humorous, Storm shows the fragility of human connections
in the face of unexpected forces."
Customer Comments
Reader: Michael Shapiro from Sonoma County, CA USA
"From those first few sentences, Noren drew me into his story with
vivid and harrowing descriptions of his motorcycle ride around the Baltic
Sea. Even more compelling are his honest accounts of how the trip affected
his relationship with his long-term partner Suzanne."
Sudan : The Bradt Travel Guide (Bradt Travel Guide)
by Paul Clammer
Paperback - 280 pages (May 2005)
From the Author Paul Clammer:
"While I was researching and writing, I was very conscious that
a high number of visitors to Sudan are overlanders,
both two and four-wheeled, so there's a lot of
stuff throughout the text to help them - descriptions
of piste, fuel costs, GPS points for sites in
the desert and ferry crossings, etc etc. All
open border crossings are detailed (including
shipping costs for vehicles in the case of the
Egyptian and Saudi ferries), as well as brief
route notes for Darfur in the hopeful event
of a resolution to the crisis there in the lifetime
of the book - these came from an overland travel
company..."

The Tao of the Ride: Motorcycles and the Mechanics of the Soul
by Garri Garripoli
Paperback - 141 pages (April 1999)
Customer Comments
Desiree from Toronto, Canada - "We need more books like this in
the world! This book really grabbed me - it's honest, fun, lyrical yet
speaks from the heart. I don't ride, but the author really gave me a
true sense of what it could be like even as a passenger, so I finally
picked up the courage to go for a ride with my boyfriend who just got
a Yamaha V-Star Classic, and now I understand his obsession. I also enjoyed
reading the other contributors thoughts and feelings about their experiences,
especially the women! I'm thinking I may just take some lessons and get
my own bike after this... Great read and many thanks for sharing this
poetry in motion."
Greg Glazier from Colorado USA- "If you didn't "get"
Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, you may not
understand this book, either... But if you've ever spent any time on
a motorcycle, even if you aren't conversant in the principles of Taoism
and Qi, you'll likely connect with the prose of The Tao of the Ride...In
my twenties, I loved bikes because they were fast, "dangerous"
and cool; In my fifties, I have discovered an entirely new aspect of
riding: I ride for the meditation, the feeling of balance, the sights,
smells, and sounds as the countryside flys by. I also find that although
I usually double my average travel time when riding, I get to my destination
totally exhilarated and refreshed. Thanks for the insight and inspiration,
Garri!"
Tea Time with Terrorists: A Motorcycle Journey into the Heart of Sri Lanka's Civil War
by
Mark Stephen Meadows
Paperback - 224 pages
(April 27, 2010)
Alan Moores from Booklist:
"How serendipitous—a word with Sri Lankan origins—that an itinerant American hitchhiker and biker would write one of the better English-language accounts (so far) of the long, unspeakably violent civil war in Sri Lanka that ended last spring. It makes little difference that his travels occurred before war's end; the story still needs telling. Meadows stays close to the ground throughout his entire journey, mixing with civilians and military and, yes, terrorists on their own turf, all the while sharing copious notes on what his senses take in and providing historical context for the ages-old conflict between Tamil and Sinhalese. Unlike most journalists, who were barred from Sri Lanka's far north, Meadows motorbiked from the relative safety of capital city Colombo up into the heart of that war zone. If he did not witness combat, his account of its effects on the local community is chilling. He does update readers on the war's end, warning, as have others, of future conflict if the underlying issues between the government and the Tamils are not resolved."

10 Years on 2 Wheels: 77 Countries, 250,000 Miles
by Helge Pedersen
Hardcover - 208 pages 2nd edition (June 1998)
Great photos, light on text and no "how-to", but a superb
coffee table book to explain to non-riders why you want to do it... (Grant)
Reviewer: A reader from Seattle, Washington, February 21, 1999
"Helge Pedersen is one of the most traveled and internationally-known
professional touring motorcyclists in the world, and well-known to the
world's motorcycle press. His book is beautifully done- world class photos.
And Helge's story is extremely entertaining. He is both humorous and
humble as he relates anecdotes of his travels-definitely not a 'tour
guide' view of the world. Helge's portraits of people show such sensitivity
and elegance. It's very obvious how much he respects his subjects. His
photos of the landscapes are dramatic, different. It's an easy read.
I love this book."

Trans - Americas Guinness World Record
"The first people to ever hold Double Guinness World Records™ of 'Around the World by Motorcycle'
and the 'Trans-Americas by Motorcycle'.
On 22 September 2003, a rugged, mud caked BMW R1150GS Adventure armed with battered metal panniers and a buckled back
wheel, crawled into the town of Ushuaia, the most southern city in the world that can be reached by road. An
exhausted couple, having just slid their way treacherously through a snowy Paso de Garibaldi, finally reached
the very end of the road, beyond which lay Antarctica. The bike was ridden by Kevin Sanders, with his wife
Julia on the back, and the husband and wife team had just completed what had never been done before. Starting
from Deadhorse, Alaska, they had ridden the length of the Americas Continent, some 27,200 kms, in less than
35 days and in doing so, rode into the Guinness World Record™ Book
for a second time. Unaided, with no back up team, no support vehicle and only their spirit of adventure to
bring them through, they smashed the existing record by over 12 days.
Filmed by Kevin and Julia as the record unfolded, this is an inspired account of the challenges they faced, braving
the remote wilderness of the Artic tundra, riding over 1,000 miles day in the USA, facing border bureaucracy
through Central America, kidnap risks in Colombia, Ecuadorian civil unrest, and the icy wastelands of Patagonia,
but ultimately winning through to claim their second Guinness World Record."

Two Wheels Through Terror
by Glen Heggstad
Hardcover (2004)
Production Description:
Only weeks after the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001,
Glen Heggstad set out from his sunny California home vowing not
to return until he had accomplished his life-long goal of riding
a motorcycle in a lap around South America. Upon crossing into
Mexico, with terrorism on his mind, he wondered if he was riding
away from the fire, or directly into it? Not long after, when
he was stopped at a roadblock in the remote jungle of Colombia,
he found his chilling answer....
Steve Pickford from Oxford, Oxon, UK said on HUBB:
"Book was very good IMO. Glenn has an interesting style
of writing, not too dissimilar to his thread on the Adv Riders
site. I enjoyed the book & keeping myself updated with his
thread."
Two Wheels to Adventure
by Danny Liska
Hardcover
Regina Liska on Star Cruiser:
"This book has all pages of pure adventure like few have ever known! Rather than just an adventure story, this 755-page hardback is crammed with illustrations, maps, and information, which put it in a class all by itself. Nearly every page has a photo or illustration! This is one of the best travel books ever written and the best motorcycle book ever! This second edition hardcover book features more than eight hundred photographs and illustrations, as well as the same extraordinary high quality printing to exactly match the first edition released in 1989. Now you have the opportunity to get this Classic Motorcycle Book, Two Wheels to Adventure by Danny Liska at a reasonable price. Available in English or Spanish."
Frank Westworth from RealClassic.co.uk:
"My Best Book? It's got to be Danny Liska's utterly stunning Two Wheels To Adventure, which I think you can still buy. Read that, and understand that popping off on a short Land's End to John O'Groats trip is a bit feeble!
There are a lot of good books about motorcycle journeys, but this is my own favourite. Danny Liska didn't ride around the whole globe, but trekked across just a single continent. But, well, this is a real epic - read a copy, and you'll see what I mean. Humbling isn't the word - but staggering surely is!"

Don't forget to let Regina know how you heard about the book! :)
Note: This book WAS out of print for a long time, but Regina Liska has reprinted it, and it's now - finally - available again. Recommended. Grant
Two
Wheels to Panama
by William Carroll
paperback
"In the mid-1950s, a frustrated Bill Carroll set out on a trip
he would remember forever, riding his 1950 BSA B33 from Los Angeles to
El Paso and then through Mexico and Central America to reach the Panama
Canal. His 7,772-mile solo trip led him through often desolate and undeveloped
terrain, where he encountered jungles, forest idols, deep rivers, burial
grounds, mysterious and amusing characters and many other unexpected
adventures. This fascinating and well-written book is filled with more
than 175 incredible black and white photographs and maps of a wild and
uncharted Central America that no longer exists. If youre considering
a trek south of the border, this book will inspire you to do it . . .
its just as exciting today as it was thenand now there are
roads!"

Under Asian Skies
by Sam Manicom November, 2007
Review by Glynn Roberts, UK Horizons Unlimited Meeting Organiser
"Sam Manicom's new book Under Asian Skies has a quote on the back cover that says, 'Too often... I would hear men speak of the miles covered that day, rarely of what they had seen.'
Sam has the skills of the story teller and this book easily transports you into three years of journey across Asia. He manages to bring the sounds, scents and heat of Asia to life without wordy overkill and he has obviously researched his historical facts carefully.
As with his first book Into Africa, he attracts all sorts of dramas most travellers wouldn't encounter.
He nearly gets killed in Australia , twice! Catches dengue fever in Thailand and is nursed back to life by a prostitute, gets arrested in Madras, in the middle of the plague that is hitting India . He battles with the red tape that anyone who has tried to get their bike in or out of India will tell you about - myself included.
In places Under Asian Skies is sad, and in others it's outrageously funny - look out for his battle with the Sydney port officials and the bus ride in Indonesia .
All in all this is a really good read, whether you have been across Asia, or are planning a trip.
This is true travelling on the cheap and not your everyday story.
Recommended."

Uneasy Rider: Travels Through a Mid-Life Crisis
by Mike Carter
March 18, 2008
Production Description:
"A broken heart and a moment of drunken bravado inspired middle-aged, typically cautious journalist Mike Carter to embark on a six-month-long motorcycle trip around Europe. After completing a brief residential motorcycle course and hastily remortgaging his apartment, Mike set off alone, resolving to go wherever the road took him. By the end of his journey, Mike had traveled nearly 20,000 miles and had roamed from the Arctic Circle in the north of Europe to the Mediterranean coast in the south, and from the Portuguese Atlantic coast in the west to the Iraqi border of Turkey in the east. This humorous and insightful account follows Mike through his adventures into nations and towns of every variety, as well as into his own mind as he finds his post-divorce scars starting to heal and attempts to discover his purpose in life. Self-deprecating, poetic, and utterly engaging, Mike's is a heroic and inspiring journey for anyone who ever wanted to leave the nine-to-five in the dust."

Fielding's Southern Vietnam on Two
Wheels : The Ups & Downs of Solo Motorcycling Through Exotica
by Wink Dulles
Editorial Reviews
"There is nothing quite like long-distance motorcycle touring
and there is no place quite like the jungles of Vietnam to do it
through." So starts Wink Dulles's classic guide to Vietnam à la
motorcycle. Even if ripping along the rutted routes of Southeast
Asia has never been your ambition, the more you read, the more
mightily it starts to appeal. There's the freedom-of-transportation
aspect, the automatic-ice-breaker draw, and the one-with-the-elements
appeal. So what if the elements aren't always such that you want
to be one with them? You're there to experience Vietnam, right?
And not through some air-conditioned buffer.

Vroom with a View
by Peter Moore
Paperback (2004)
Synopsis:
He was an Australian author approaching 40. She was a fading
Italian beauty from the sixties. They spent one unforgettable
summer together, a magical road trip from Milan to Rome. Only
one thing stood in the way of perfect love. Sophia was a motor
scooter. After a late night Tai Bo fitness commercial warns him
that his life will be over after 40, Peter Moore decides to pursue
a boyhood dream sparked by watching old black and white movies
of Sophia Loren - to tour Italy on a Vespa, in pursuit of la dolce
vita. From picnicking in the Italian alps to exploring tumbledown
seaside villages, gate-crashing Frances Mayes's villa and re-enacting
Roman Holiday, this is as much a romance as a travel adventure.
Not only does Peter sweep the woman of his dreams off her feet,
he falls in love with a side of Italy others rarely see, along
with Sophia of course...
Michael King from Hobart, Tasmania:
"I selected this book on spec and was not disappointed.
It looked like a good read and turned out to be brilliant. Having
admired beautiful old Vespas in Vietnam, this book has almost
put me in the driver's seat, and having experienced the Mekong
Delta, I cannot wait for the Author's dice with death on a Vespa
in that part of the World. I now want to visit Italy even more
and can imagine the wife and I cruising on a Vespa, the only trick
is how to avoid the fashion outlets on the way to Lake Como."

Way to Go: Two of the World's Great Motorcycle Journeys
by Geoff Hill
Paperback (2005)
Book Description from Amazon.com.uk:
Way to Go brings together two epic motorcycle journeys, from Delhi to Belfast on an Enfield, and from Chicago to LA on a Harley Davidson. A thoughtful, hilarious, off-beat adventure travelogue by award-winning journalist Geoff Hill.
A reader from Papa Westray, Orkney United Kingdom:
This book is written with a quick quirky sence of humour that is side splitting funny. It is a long time, if ever, since I have laughed so long and so hard at a serious book. I don't often read a book more than once but this is one which i will happily read over and over again and each time get more out of it's pages. I look forward to Geoff's next book.

A classic, not so much about motorcycles, but more about
one man and his insights about life, relationships, and quality. Recommended

Synopsis:
A reference and companion volume to "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle
Maintenance" explores the background and underlying symbolism of
Pirsig's classic work.
A reader from Seattle, WA, USA, 21 June, 1999
"Highly recommended companion to Pirsig's book. Additional background
material, both philosophical and historical, really illuminates the original
Pirsig book. The bonus is sometimes startling insights, and new questions
(often unanswered for the reader to work out). Think of it as an informal
but well-written textbook by teachers who care both about the material
and the student. It lures the reader into further self-study in epistemology,
metaphysics, aesthetics, and ethics. Contains valuable passages that
were edited out of the original Pirsig book."
Zero to Sixty: The Motorcycle Journey of a Lifetime
Nearing sixty, diagnosed with heart disease and feeling his mortality,
Gary Paulsen buys his first Harley-Davidson and rides from his home in
New Mexico to Alaska-and from the present into his past, through
the landmarks of a singular life... Amid the silence and beauty of running
the road on his Harley, Paulsen celebrates the comforts of hard
work, the thrill of challenge met bravely, and the peculiar joys of life
lived to its fullest.
Customer Comments
Baruch B. Smalley from Albany, Oregon, USA - "Zero to Sixty is
a great story about a motorcycle trip around North America. It tells
of the whole trip and throughout the book splits off to tell of what
led up to it... I liked this book because it was realistic and interesting.
There were problems to solve, memories to recolect and some parts were
just left to the imagination. Gary Paulsen once again uses his great
skill as an author to captivate the reader's attenion throughout the
book."
And another opinion:
"A reader from Vernon, Texas USA - If you want to read 224 pages
of someone telling you how tough they are and how bad they've
had it in life, with very little about motorcycling, then
this books for you! This book is written on about a 4th grade
level with dirty words thrown in as if to show off that he's a 'man'.
Save your hard earned money!"
